While there is a mystery going on (and it is quite a good one), the focus is never completely on that - which is why I enjoyed this novel as much as I did. A lot of thrillers focus on the twists and turns, and because of that, the characters end up being flat. Here, that is not the case. I loved reading about both Beatrice and Tess, and I loved how their bond was always strong, no matter how different they were. This is one of those rare thrillers that got me really emotional, and I cared more for the characters, than the mystery - and I think that is why I was really moved and shaken at the end, when I found out what was really going on.This isn’t a roller-coaster ride, rather than a thriller I’d call it psychological-suspense. Even rather than fast-paced with a pervading sense of menace, an uneasiness that quietly builds. Never heard it put quite that way, and the idea is somehow comforting.The book has well-built characters, especially the ones of the sisters, and an interesting setting, i.e. the arty London and the medical world. The plot has many exciting twists, especially in relation to the medical evidence and various characters. Simon and Emilio Codi’s lives are depicted in a convincing manner. Rosamund Lupton is a British author of three novels— Sister (2010), Afterwards (2012), and The Quality of Silence (2016). She studied literature at Cambridge University and lives in London with her husband and two children. Rafi’s girlfriend Hannah does everything she can to nurse Matthew while trapped with others in the library. Jacintha, the English teacher, is in the middle of the reading poem with a class, and she is forced to stop and cope with the unfolding tragedy.

Beatrice’s journey as she unravels her sister’s events that led to Tess’s death will keep you hooked to your seat. Can she finally find the truth about what happened to her sister? The plot is well constructed, drawing the reader right into the center of the mystery. Rosamund Lupton has revealed Beatrice’s grief and loss so well that readers will find themselves empathizing with her. What were your initial theories about how Tess died? How would you have pursued the case if you had been one of the DIs?Bee is also supposedly mature and sophisticated enough to understand the powers and pitfalls of both depression and therapy. Yet, at the same time she insists over and over and over again that her sister, Tess, could not have committed suicide because she wasn't the type to hide from her problems and because she valued life too much after losing their brother to a prolonged illness. I found this response to depression deeply offensive. Suicide has little to do with hiding from problems or one's respect for life. It has everything to do with an abiding need for peace, for an end to the pain. Depression is a disease that can be fatal. It infuriated me when Bee would insist that she "knew" Tess and that Tess would never commit suicide. Bee may have known a healthy Tess, but someone in the grips of depression no longer has a strong sense of self. In many ways they are no longer themselves. Dr. Nichols, Professor Rosen, and William all inhabit the world of diagnosis and treatment. How do their three different roles (and mindsets) reflect the realities of modern medicine? Though Chrom-Med is a fictional company, what real-life questions about gene therapy are raised by the novel? What is the ethical way to apply humanity’s knowledge of the human genome? Tess' family and the police close the case as suicide and try to move on with their lives, coming to terms with some revelations and self questioning, however, Bea takes it upon herself to discover the real truth. Single-minded in her search for a killer, Bea moves into Tess’s apartment, and into her life (including wearing her clothes) and throws herself headlong into finding her sister’s murderer. Everyone thinks she is mad (which quite frankly she probably is), but Bea knows her sister would never have killed herself voluntarily, even under incredible tragic circumstances.
