Umweltschutz geht so: Hier mit Styropor oder ähnlichem sauber arbeiten, dann würde man sich unnötige Retourfahrten ersparen. You’d think they’d be more memorable overall, given how ready their fanbase was to pounce on any assertions that Dark All Day wasn’t a good album (which it wasn’t), but maybe that’s just how it goes when there’s so little musical nutrition to go on.

It’s all incredibly similar stuff all over the place, from the analogue synths to the gated percussion, to the saxophone that trails through about half-a-dozen songs here, and sounds more perfunctory every single time. And while that’s more on those loud, isolated voices who’ll spend their time screaming at the defence of an act they have no more personal stake in than said act themselves, you have to believe that Gunship are aware of that. I hate 80s music (or at least I thought it did, growing up in the 90s) but Gunship almost singlehandedly revealed how wrong I was. And thus, it’s telling how much backup on Unicorn comes from those established names in ‘80s—or ‘80s-replicating—synthwave work.Early in their career GUNSHIP very understandably did this, but on this album they are embracing the future in a way that they haven’t before. Tech Noir’ finally gets a sequel too, with ‘Tech Noir 2’ bringing Charlie Simpson back to team up with his Fightstar bandmates alongside John Carpenter.

GUNSHIP have always seemed like an entity that could easily float into any space within the electronic music scene that they wanted to and bless their hearts they just don’t care to land in one spot. It’s the consequence of caring so much for aesthetic to true musical inspiration is cast so far aside, it’s barely on the board anymore. The songs are great and varied but all with that GUNSHIP vibe, which blends so well with this album. That album came out five years ago now, and the single prevailing memory of Gunship is their slavish desire to ‘80s synthwave, in a way that subsumed anything approaching a cogent idea or identity in favour of laying that devotion bare.

Their restlessness is nothing but a benefit for us as this record is a warm welcome back and quite the treat for those of us that have been waiting for years for that neon and chrome synthwave that they are so adept at creating. Unfortunately, once you’re past the halfway mark, songs start to bleed into each other and it’s just too much.Due to inventory and accounting purposes, we do not exchange items received for different items than originally purchased. My favorites right now are Tech Noir II (a more upbeat sequel to the original), Empress Of The Damned (there's a lot going on in this song and it has a lot of energy and attitude) and Ghost (the music video is absolutely hypnotizing). Granted, there’s not a ton that comes from that, seeing as most don’t get to show much of themselves off, instead falling into Gunship’s maw to be spat out as a nominal vocaloid fit for purpose.

It just leads to an album that drags incessantly, not helped by how little variation there is the chugging synth progressions. The saxophone work by Tim Capello is stunning with collaboration also with the legendary John Carpenter. One of the potential downfalls of this genre is how it is often a rose-colored look at the past by nearly constantly invoking nostalgia.

In the last eight years, they’ve released just two albums to date, Unicorn marking their third album and, unsurprisingly, it’s just as jam-packed with features from across the musical spectrum as ever.
