However, the standard brew basket on the Flair Neo Flex and Classic slightly differs from most other baskets on the market. CoffeeGeek has an espresso machine testing regimen and guide we developed over 15 years, and it includes parameters for traditional lever machines, with full boilers and enclosed groupheads. The regimen is applicable to manual, unpowered lever machines with some modifications. The Flair 58 falls a bit between the two groups, so we modified our testing parameters where required. We tested the machine over a six month period, using it for approximately 90 days.

As with every Flair manual espresso maker, there are several steps to pulling a shot: preheat the portafilter, measure and grind the coffee beans, put together the brew head, pour in the water, and press the lever.

Flair Pro

Simplified Dial-in: The Flow-Control Portafilter builds appropriate pressure for extraction, reducing the need for extensive dialling-in. Once we’ve detailed how the two are different from each other, you’ll be able to make a better-informed decision as to which model suits your requirements. What Is The Flair Espresso Maker? HANDCRAFT SHOTS OF ESPRESSO – The Flair PRO 2 is a 100% human-powered, manual espresso press. With the Flair PRO 2, you have a complete manual espresso machine that can produce professional quality shots of espresso from your home, or wherever you are. Add 70ml of boiled water and a dose of up to 24 grams to yield up to a 56 ml shot with beautiful crema. A burr grinder is essential for use with this product. Two Portafilters: Includes both the Flow-Control and Bottomless 2-in-1 portafilters for convenience or advanced control.

Bottom line though, these disks need a good regular cleaning way beyond just rinsing them under hot water. Boiling them would help. Long soaks in espresso machine cleaner, ditto. You may also want to consider buying an ultrasonic bath cleaner to really get the dirt out. There is a range of other add-ons available too. This means that you can buy the NEO as a beginner and upgrade it as you gain experience without needing a new, more expensive espresso maker. However, if you do want a new machine, the PRO has all those extras included. The Flair Neo Flex’s espresso-making ability mirrors the Flair Classic, delivering good-quality shots. The basket and brew head are practically identical between them, so that’s not so strange. That was definitely the best espresso I think I have ever had in my life. I cannot believe I made that shot. It puts my Lelit machine to shame.”– Robert Affordable and Capable: Strikes the perfect balance between affordability and functionality, making it accessible to all home baristas.

Position the plunger, and ensure your cup is well placed beneath the portafilter. 5.Pull A Shot Of Espresso Hopefully, we have clearly explained what Flair espresso machines can do and how they operate. We’ve also explained how the least expensive of Flair’s range, the NEO, compares against the most expensive, the PRO. Armed with that information, you should now be in a position to make an informed decision as to which to buy or whether a manual espresso maker is even for you. To use the Flair Neo Flex, follow these straightforward steps, which are identical to the regular Flair Classic if you opt for the standard portafilter: However, the Flair Neo Flex does cut some corners, primarily concerning the plastic frame and the peculiar pressure release system. These are areas where the older Flair Neo with a steel frame excels. In 2021, Flair took a new direction with their machines, with the introduction of the Flair 58 model, the subject of this review.

Flair Flair NEO Gray reviews

A new addition to the Neo Flex is the ‘pressure release valve’ inside the piston, designed to break if the grind is too fine. This allows the water to pass through the valve, which can be replaced later. While this may be a handy feature, it also raises concerns about the durability of the valve. The Robot has a more unique shape and I love that it takes up so little room on the counter”– Jason There are add-ons, too, with a dosing cup that doubles as a tamper, a dosing ring that helps prevent mess, and a removable drip tray. Simplifying the brewing process with the Flow Control portafilter manages the pressure build up and the speed at which the water moves through your coffee grounds to ensure proper espresso extraction occurs.

The PRO 2 is an upgrade to the PRO with an enhanced bottomless portafilter, a removable spout, a silicone grip for improved ergonomics, and a gauge guard, making it more durable. The Cost You can improve the espresso quality of both models with additional accessories. For the Flair Classic, add the pressure gauge kit. Add the pressure gauge kit and the bottomless 2-in-1 portafilter for the Flair Neo. This modular system allows your espresso machine to grow with you as you gain experience rather than forcing you to buy a new model. We also suggest buying the pressure gauge kit. This is a great accessory for monitoring the pressure as you brew. The Flair Neo Flex includes a specially designed red pressurised basket in the brew head, ensuring effortless brewing with minimal effort. As a result, the Pressure Gauge will consistently display alternating high and low pressure readings. Bottomless 2-in-1 Portafilter– Perfect for when espresso brewers are ready to control their extraction more. This portafilter requires a high-quality, espresso capable burr grinder, but means that home baristas can control the variables of each shot, and ensure their espresso if to their exacting standards. I’m a firm believer that both pressure profiling and temperature profiling lead to better espresso. Staring shots at low pressure gives a full saturation effect before bringing things up to the traditional 135psi / 9BAR of pressure. Slowly lowering the pressure as extraction continues means you’re torturing the spent coffee less, and extracting less bitters towards the end of the shot, compared to full 9BAR pump machines. Water temperature plays a crucial role here too: the higher the temperature, the more unsavory flavour components get extracted towards the end of the shot. When you want a shot of espresso from the Flair Pro, you have to think “assembly required” for every shot pull. It’s not a bad thing per se, and not a hardship by any means, but it does take time and it becomes a ritual. They simply cannot compete with the Flair 58 in terms of ease of use. Attach the heated brew head to the top of your filter basket. After putting together the brew unit, attach it to the portafilter base. Then, pour boiling water into the brew chamber until there is around 60ml of water in it (or the top of the marked line). This will produce around 45ml of espresso.
