The 7899 range with the polymer-coated handles sounds great, but I didn’t like them one bit. I like to feel the screwdriver and the movement in my fingers, and the polymer didn’t feel good. It’s like driving a car with heavy-duty boots on. Many of the premium alternatives offer replaceable tips, meaning you can replace them when they start to get worn out. Replacing only the tips is affordable to do, but it means you won’t have to replace the whole tool. And the fact is that over time, it can actually prove to be more affordable to opt for quality screwdrivers and only replace the tips, rather than constantly buying new, cheaper screwdrivers, so this is definitely something that is worth taking into consideration. Grip

Horotec screwdrivers are expensive, but they’re very high-quality. Rolex doesn’t provide them for their certified watchmakers for no reason. If you can afford it, go for it.Whilst magnetic screwdrivers can be really convenient for a wide area of tasks when screwing, they’re not recommended when it comes to watches. The reason is simple: magnetism can have a negative effect on watch movements, magnetize them, and cause them to lose their accuracy. Fortunately, most screwdrivers that are made specifically for watches are not magnetic for this reason. But still, it can be good to keep in mind, because the last thing you want to do is magnetize your watch whilst working on it. How to use a watch screwdriver This 32-in-1 screwdriver kit contains, as the name suggests 31 tools. It is a 32-piece screwdriver kit that includes screwdrivers and a magnetic screwdriver headset. The screwdriver head includes a magnet and can be tightened during maintenance. Bergeon is the ultimate brand for watch tools. It is the brand of choice for many professional watchmakers, and they also manufacture tools for many official service centers for an array of different watch brands. Guillem from Guille watchmaker uses a Bergeon 30081-S10 set and a 9-piece set of Cousins’ own brand. The screwdrivers are made of tool steel and are made in Europe. It includes a set of 9 color-coded screwdrivers with 18 spare blades and 2 extra set screws.

Bergeon Swiss Made Stainless Steel 3.00 mm Screwdriver with special knurled handle and ball bearing head. The big 18 mm diameter domed head design makes it easier to rest your palm on top and 8 mm diameter special knurled handle helps your fingers grip the body better, while the ball bearing inside the top of the head spins with ease as you unscrew tough and stubborn screws. Uses the stainless steel screwdriver blade 6899-M-300. Anthony from No BS Watchmaker uses two sets. A Bergeon set like the 3044 (it’s similar, but not exact. Probably an older set that’s since been discontinued). He also uses a 12-piece set of VOH screwdrivers for the more expensive watches. Now, the topic of magnets close to watches is a sensitive subject. Watches should not be subject to magnetism, and there is in fact a magnet in this tool. As the magnet is small and doesn’t touch the actual watch, it should be no problem, but it is still good to be careful, and use it with care and thought. Sizes of screwdrivers are .50 mm, .60 mm, .80 mm, 1.00 mm, 1.20 mm, 1.40 mm, 1.60 mm, 2.00 mm, 2.50 mm, and 3.00 mm. Also comes with replacement blades for all screwdrivers. The process of using a watch screwdriver is pretty straightforward and not that complicated. But it also depends on what you intend to screw.Screwdriver with adapted blade to adjust the eccentric screw of the minute counter for the calibre range ETA Valjoux 7750. Also for Calibers 7751, 7753, 7754, 7757, 7758, 7760, 7765, 7768, 7770, A07.211 and A07.231 Henrik from Horologer uses a 14-piece Horotec set which is not available anymore. The alternative would be this 12-piece set. Screwdrivers are essential tools for the watchmaker, but it can be confusing. Is Bergeon worth the hype? Is Horotec overpriced? Are you a good watchmaker if you don’t use screwdrivers from any of the big brands? Using poor-quality screwdrivers will ultimately mean that you get a worse grip on the screw. To keep them in place, watch screws are often also screwed in extremely hard. And low-quality screwdrivers plus tough screws are not a great combination. At worst, you may wear out the screw head, making it more or less impossible to get any grip. Or, it can cause you to slip and scratch the watch. With that said, when looking for a watch screwdriver kit, it is advised to opt for the more qualitative ones on the market.

The issue with a lot of screwdrivers is that they are often low quality, which can cause the tips to wear out or even break. This is especially due to the fact that watch screws are generally very small, and thus require very small-tipped screwdrivers. This in turn further increases the importance of high-quality screwdrivers which are built to last. In the end, I sold most of the screwdrivers apart from the Bergeon 30081-S09 set. It simply feels the best, but it’s a personal preference.

I started with a 9-piece set of A*F screwdrivers, of which I replaced the blades with Bergeon ones. They were good screwdrivers, but I decided to upgrade by buying individual Horotec stainless steel screwdrivers in the most used sizes.

Ideally, a screwdriver should also have a freely-moving head (known as a swivel-head) which makes it easier to achieve greater precision when using the screwdriver is being used. Fortunately, most screwdrivers have this, but not all do, so keep that in mind. Anti-magnetic The screwdrivers have a hefty feel to them, which tends to be a sign of quality in the context of screwdrivers. They are made of stainless steel and have a gripping surface. The tools measure 3 5/8 inches, which converts to about 9 cm in length. If you’re not really sure about watchmaking and you have a limited budget, an affordable unbranded or own-brand set from Beco or Cousins is the way to go.
