Description

As for the display, the Nokia 8.3 5G is fitted with an IPS panel measuring 6.8in across the diagonal, with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 and a 20:9 aspect ratio. Despite not being an HDR-certified panel, the screen will upscale SDR content to a near-HDR format, using the same upscaling tech that was first introduced in the Nokia 8.1. Bottom line? You won’t feel like you’re making any compromises in the power department here, unless you’re always cranking the most demanding games to their limits.

You’ll be shooting 16MP shots with the main camera by default, and to make the most of the 64MP capabilities you need to switch to the Pro mode. That’s easy enough to find, but it’s not entirely clear that you’re only shooting in 16MP if you don’t select Pro mode. The one area best mid-range phones, outside of Pixels, struggle to compete with the best phone is camera tech. This remains the case with the Nokia 8.3 5G, which offers passable, but fairly by the numbers camera performance. The auto mode is capable of taking decent photos for use on social media. Images are generally sharp and the camera app/shutter speeds and auto focus are nice and snappy. Images also don’t feel massively over-processed, which is a common problem on most phones at this price. But colours and dynamic range aren’t on a par with what you’ll get on a Pixel 5 and generally can look a little dull compared to some competitors. The Nokia 8.3 5G has a pretty hefty 4,500mAh battery, although it didn’t really translate to anything exceptional in our battery life test. Switching off all data connections, setting the screen brightness to 170cd/m² and running a looped video, the Nokia 8.3 5G went from full to empty in 12hrs 58mins. It managed to beat the iPhone SE (2020) by an hour and a half, but the OnePlus 8 and Moto G 5G Plus came out on top yet again. The Nokia 8.3 5G is HMD Global’s first attempt at a cheap phone with 5G. It targets the same busy space as the Pixel 5 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro.

Operating System

The phone’s synthetic benchmark scores mirrored my real world findings. Testing the phone with Geekbench 4, which stress tests the CPU to give a rough gauge of overall performance the Nokia 8.3 5G ran in with 571 single-core and 1543 multi-core scores. These scores are par for the course for a phone running the 765G chipset. The Pixel 5, which uses the same chip, scored 600 single and 1623 multi in the same test. It certainly is worth using the Night mode in low contrast light, with the end results being a bit brighter. However, the overall quality of low light pictures is not quite to the same standard as those using the Night Sight mode of the Pixel 4a. Lens flare and ghosting is an issue when shooting directly towards the sun. Unless you like the distortion, it's probably best not to point the camera straight towards strong light.

In Pro photo mode, shutter speed can be manually selected up to a maximum of 20 seconds, while ISO goes up to 6400. If you can support the phone using a tripod, then this manual control over shutter speed might well be the best option for low light shooting.A few years ago the Nokia 8.3’s standard 60Hz rating would have been fine, but with key phones including the Pixel 5, Galaxy S20 FE, Moto G 5G Plus and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro all featuring the tech it feels like an odd omission. Elsewhere, there’s a button on the left for calling up Google Assistant, which we’d rather do without, as we found ourselves pressing it accidentally (thankfully, you can turn it off). On the right, there are the usual volume buttons and an enlarged power button, which doubles up as the fingerprint reader. The Nokia 8.3 5G is a decent phone in its own right. Its biggest draw is its eye-catching design, and we found ourselves regularly getting lost in the depths of its beautiful aurora-like rear. While things are far more reserved around the front, there’s no escaping the benefit of its larger-than-average display, particularly if you spend a lot of time browsing content or watching Netflix series on loop. All of the numbers are promising with the Nokia 8.3 5G; a quad camera, 64 megapixels pictures, 4K video with H-Log profile and DNG RAW capture.

Nokia 8.3 5G Review | Trusted Reviews

With the standard f/1.9 lens and even the ultra wide f/2.2 lens, detail quality is consistent from centre to edges. In fact, the final pictures usually appear better than what you see on-screen in the camera app.

The speed of time-lapse and slow motion video appears to be fixed. We prefer the Google Pixel 4a approach of offering five different speed options to cover various scenarios. Stabilisation can be applied to slow motion videos post capture. However, we can't help but compare the Nokia 8.3 5G with the recently reviewed Google Pixel 4a and by comparison the camera functionality often comes up short. Although the primary camera can technically capture 64MP images, it actually takes 16MP pictures by default via a process called pixel-binning, which combines pixels into a lower-resolution image in an effort to reduce visual noise. It is possible to enable the full 64MP capture in the camera software’s ‘Pro’ mode if you want, though. But the Nokia 8.3 5G is a strong handset overall, and it’s certainly worth considering if you’re looking for a phone that offers strong battery life, a large display and 5G connectivity. Nokia 8.3 5G release date and price For video, in addition to the standard, ultra-wide and macro lenses, there are 'Action' and 'Dual Sight' settings. Action gives better stabilised footage at the cost of a notable image crop, while Dual Sight splits the screen in two to record with both front and rear cameras simultaneously - we love that feature.
