The Skylarks War - Book Review - Nikki Young The Skylarks War - Book Review - Nikki Young

The Swallows’ Flight will not disappoint, although we have moved forward in time to another generation, another set of characters and another World War. Skylarks can lay up to four clutches a year, but this has likely been limited by agricultural intensification in recent decades, and the switch from spring to autumn crop sowing in particular. I'll start by saying that, as a war book, this isn't as successful to me as The Road Home or Rilla of Ingleside. It's a big book as well, this, it doesn't shy away from some hard and precise horrors in the world whether they are familial, and of individuals who do not know how to love their children or indeed, whether they can, or bigger, made of people fighting and dying in landscapes far away from home. After he left to war, he still continued to send letters to make sure everyone was okay and to tell them all about his adventures. Some of her writing here is some of her best, I think, encompassing a curious mixture of numbness and truth and sadness and fear and honesty that makes the pages feel almost like a primary source. Throughout this time, we hear Rupert’s side of the story, the true horror of the war and a reality that few back home knew anything about.

This is their story, and this time it is Ruby, scarred and self-conscious from the start, and introverted Kate, who win our hearts. That you read it as a child, reread it over and over, until it forms part of you along with Anne Shirley and Jo March, the Fossil sisters, Jo Bettany and Veronica Weston and Nicola Marlowe. So I would definitely recommend this book to other students who learning about that period, or even if they aren’t!Rupert is a childhood friend of both, one of those universally liked people whose warmth and sunshine is felt by all. Finally, I would 100% recommend this book to other children and would be interested to read some other books by this wonderful author. If you enjoy historical fiction and stories set in World War One, please check out the first book in my time travelling series, Time School.

Rupert and Peter, on the other hand, are reluctant boarding school pupils, who cannot wait until the day they can leave. I really enjoyed this book, in particular the character build-up and how being a soldier in the war wasn’t the main theme (unlike most war books). The plot of the story was a combination of a few attributes and the way it was written portrayed this very well.

Summers in Cornwall, with cousin, Rupert, himself left in the grandparents’ care when his parents moved to India, hold special memories for the children. Her brand new novel for ages 10–14, The Haunted Hills, is out now, as is her novel for adults, Rose Doran Dreams. I don’t like him because he is very distant and is not a very strong father figure, at least when peter has children, he goes by doing the opposite of his dad – making him a great father.

People noticed her smile and her too-long skirt, her quietness, her chopped-off hair, and the speed with which she could climb a rope in the gym.Just finished reading The Swallows' Flight and wanted to repost this review from when I read the companion novel. However, this apparent link cannot be taken as evidence of a causal relationship as there have been many other broad-scale changes in the countryside that are at least as well correlated with Skylark changes. It's probably a very good thing I don't have children, as I would immediately have been like, "Here, child of mine, I REQUIRE you to immediately read this excellent book absolutely brimming with parental neglect, self-inflicted injuries, the horrors of the Great War, tragic unrequited love and all the pains and joys of growing up too soon and looking out for each other because you cannot trust the grown-ups to do it - yes, yes, don't worry, it's billed as a children's book and it has wonderful friendships and adventures in it in addition to the liquefied trench corpses, and also a pony.
