Naomi's journey of self discovery led to many opportunities for her to change her life for the better and to rebuild her relationships with her family and friends. J. Fikry is a bitter curmudgeon, but, as we soon learn, his sour attitude masks deep sadness and loneliness about the death of his wife. James has every stereotypical condition that would cause a teenager to be labelled as troubled--depression, antisocial behaviour, obsession--you name it, he's got it.

I also could never guess where the plot was headed and that was a pleasant change in a YA contemporary. From the author of Elsewhere and the Birthright trilogy, Gabrielle Zevin’s Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac is an imaginative YA novel all about love and second chances. I didn't feel any significance in his role, like the story would still be the same even if he wasn't there. The trail of unfinished books I've left behind me since the beginning of this year starts to become alarmingly long. There were a few instances where I was like, "No, they don't do that in Japan" which might be pretty arrogant of me.

With this change, the film was able to keep much of the English-language dialogue from the source material. A simple wager on who would have to go back to the school to collect the camera that they had left behind. First, you forget everything you learned-the dates of the Hay-Herran Treaty and Pythagorean Theorem. Sie schneidet ihre Haare, verlässt ihren Freund und findet wieder Gemeinsamkeiten mit einer alten Freundin. Trying to escape from the insanity of the first few weeks of school without a memory, Naomi visits the greenhouse, where she finds James, who gives her his t-shirt to keep her warm.

The story is actually sad but the author managed to make it light and fun even because I thought it was very entertaining. I don't always agree the main characters decisions, or the way she acts, but the important part is that I understand why she does everything and that she feels like a real life flawed person. When she eventually does remember who she is she has to face moving on with the troubles she had previously forgotten, and decide what she is going to do with her life now that she has a fresh start. The most interesting thing I found was a plastic compact containing birth control pills, which meant I was either a) having sex with someone (! I liked his character, and I understand why he acted the way he did, and what he was going through, but I didn't like their relationship. If Naomi was really making all these breakthroughs about James and Will, what about her father and mother? Shortly after the middle of the movie, Naomi remembered Mirai Hasegawa and how their past relationship was like. And Naomi just let him treat her like crap and didn't do anything about it because she loved him because he was so tortured. First, you forget everything you learned — the dates of the Hay-Herran Treaty and the Pythagorean theorem.

this narrator isn't unreliable per se, not intentionally so, but she is awfully unlikable, presumably contracting a heavy dose of jerkiness with her head trauma. The names don't even really resemble each other, apart form being one syllable slightly generic names. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Once again, Zevin takes an idea that could be an easy, flat cliché (loner dude) and creates a complex and heartbreaking (gah! Her best friend, Will, with whom she co-edits the school yearbook, and Ace, her tennis-player boyfriend, seem like strangers. It’s one reason I was so interested in reading this book, and I think the story did a good job of addressing this issue.
