Producing literature that keeps children from shooting up is possible only if the writing is fresh and skillful, never trite. When I hit the scene the next afternoon, no one was grieving for Atze. It makes sense: nobody cries on the street. But on the other hand some people were definitely pretty pissed at Atze. He’d ratted on good dealers who sold first-class junk, and now they were all sitting in jail. Also, Atze still owed a lot of people a lot of money. What you find here has been done sitting at a desk, in a small town on the shores of a lake, forty years later after the publication of the book. Very far indeed, both in time and in space, from the facts and places narrated.Overall, I sympathized with the narrator’s struggles, made me extremely thankful for life I have now.
