I really liked that idea of making the underworld into something more than land of dead ones, a place that god and bad wont mixes together. The dialogue with the friends was quite fun and there were some good side but It just felt like such a missed opportunity. Persephone has way too much 'candy' in narrative terms and the plot does not offer her enough hardship to compensate. Girl, Goddess, Queen is a fantasy rom-com retelling that weaves the classic story with snarky banter, slow burn romance and a feminist slant that sees the legendary goddess discovering her agency, desires and inherent power. I can’t tell you exactly how much I laughed while reading this one, I mean I also swooned a fair bit, but mostly I was just laughing at the sheer audacity of our badass Persephone and the banter between her and Hades (and Styx). From the side characters such as Styx, to the other inhabitants of the Underworld, to Persephone herself.

I've only read chapter 1 but I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favourite books this year. The main character- Core is growing in a book, learning who she is and not what she was forced / teached to be. I’m not certain what I expected from this Hades and Persephone retelling, but this was quite different from the many others I’ve read in the past. Zeus sought to belittle his daughter, but jumping into hell gives Persephone the courage to finally stand up for herself. Hades and Persephone just felt too different from what we associate them with, and the main focus of the story revolved around marriage for some ungodly reason.Thousands of years ago, the gods told a lie: how Persephone was a pawn in the politics of other gods. Beautifully written, utterly glorious, and fabulously powerful, this is a definite must-read that should be at the top of everyone's TBR pile! It's equal parts rom-com and fantasy while effortlessly weaving in Greek mythology elements and characters. I don't know what I was expecting, but for some reason this book surprised me in all the right ways.

The King of the Underworld is nothing like Persephone expected, and everything that she’d hoped he’d be too. The ending is bittersweet, but I won't be spoiling it ;) I read this book as part of a readalong and had so much fun discussing each chapter and sharing quotes. She has worked in publishing for a number of years and has a degree in English Literature from the University of Reading, where she also studied several classes in Ancient History. And for this one, its a retelling with a bit of a mix where Persephone is the one who is smart and cunning whilst Hades is the soft one in this relationship. She barges in to Hell, forces Hades to give her food and shelter and is surprised that Hades is not so fond of this, and somehow he is the d*ck for not being excited about helping her.Hades goes from absolutely wanting nothing to do with her, trying to trick her into breaking an oath that would have huge consequences… to then falling all over himself to apologise and grovel and make life long vows of the River Styx for her in the span of a few pages? The best fake-dating, enemies to lovers, Greek retelling sprinkled with real life truths you’ll read this summer.

It weirdly depowers Hades to remove the context of his experience and the centuries he ruled the underworld alone. Her journey of self-discovery is an empowering fist pump in the air, a massive FU in the face of her father and all the other gods who’d seek to keep her small and subdued. Sometimes the discussion on political aspects of real life thinly veiled in the narrative are thrust forward a bit too much and interrupt the flow of the story. That’s all true here, as Persephone and Hades dance around their true feelings, both of them frightened of ruining the special bond they’ve formed. There were parts where Persephone and Hades was just sweet but the slow-burn that I feel the author was aiming for.But for those who is a first timer to read a Hades and Persephone retelling, this book might work out for you. I think she's probably aware that Persephone and Demeter predate most of the Olympians by about a thousand years, that we have pretty compelling evidence for this and that Hades was added on as an after thought much later when a more patriarchal religion subsumed those early goddess worship cults. So I just close my eyes and breathe in the coconut scent of his hair and hold him close and hope that if I can’t speak my affection I can at least show it. I was way more focused on the character elements of the story and persephone’s personal growth, and I actually didn’t really care for the actual plot of the book weirdly. Having grown up on an island with only nymphs for company, Persephone is headstrong, wild and entirely ill prepared for matrimony.
