The book and the descriptions are really well written and vivid, making the book an easy read for its target audience. Best-selling Roald Dahl has delighted children for half a century and this 50th anniversary edition celebrates that amazing feat. This newly-illustrated edition of an avowed children's favorite has all the makings of a classic match-up: Milne had Shepard, Carroll had Tenniel, and now Dahl has Smith. My aunt read it to me, my sisters and my three cousins in two sittings over vacation at a beach house when I was about six. I can imagine Aunt Sponge’s appearance – a stout character who always looks angry, had a whiny voice and sweats – a lot. Determined to find a better life, the insects bite the great peach free from its tree and launch into an amazing journey to freedom. The gruesome revenges taken by the weak upon the strong are correspondingly satisfying, unfettered by impulses to mercy, and as deeply transgressive as ever: Dahl's works for children have often been objected to by adults and this particular book regularly features on lists of banned or challenged books in American libraries - but for many children, it is the spark of fantasy within bleak settings that appeals to the imagination without becoming saccharine.

His titles show no sign of ageing and thankfully they never will as all of them are timeless classics. I wanted to create an illustration to match, but also ensure the illustrations wouldn’t get too out of control and compete with the text. It was adapted into a film of the same name in 1996 (with Smith being a conceptual designer) which was directed by Henry Selick, and a musical in 2010.
