The amounts needed of each of these ingredients are as follows: – 3.5 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, 1.5 teaspoons of ground nutmeg, and a quarter of a teaspoon of ground cloves. Out of allspice? No worries. Since it tastes like a mix of so many wonderful spices, you can substitute it pretty easily:

What’s more, you can use cinnamon like for like. What we mean is that for every teaspoon of allspice you need, you can use a teaspoon of cinnamon in its place. Tomato-based dishes, including pasta sauces and soups, could do with a touch of sweetness to cut the acidity. Allspice is used in many different recipes and is popular thanks to its sweet, warm, slightly earthy taste. From there, allspice made its way around the world. And it turns out, many other cultures loved it too. FOR EXAMPLE: 1 teaspoon allspice = 1/3 teaspoon cinnamon + 1/3 teaspoon cloves + 1/3 teaspoon nutmeg.

Honestly, this is how you should store all your spices. And it works for both ground and whole allspice. Consequently, apart from texture and versatility, you have no other obstruction in using these two interchangeably. You can either buy ground allspice from the store or bring whole berries and grind them using your spice grinder whenever you want. The choice is all yours! What allspice isn’t, despite the gotcha name, is a whole bunch of spices mixed together, says Caroline Schiff, pastry chef at Gage & Tollner, executive chef at Slow Up, and author of the cookbook The Sweet Side of Sourdough. “That’s a common misconception.” So, what’s the flavor of allspice? You can also substitute whole berries for ground allspice and vice versa. In this case, 6 whole berries is equal to 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of ground allspice.

Similarly, drug interactions are not well documented. However, anecdotal evidence indicates a potentially negative effect when large amounts of allspice are consumed while taking blood clotting medication. Allspice is used in cooking and baking. You can also get allspice berries which can be added to meats, often dark meats such as beef and lamb to add an extra flavor, much like you would add garlic.

We have discussed the use of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg separately in place of allspice, however, perhaps an even better substitute is to use all three of them together! You will find it as part of spice mixes like the Ethiopian Berbere, the Middle Eastern Baharat and the American Pumpkin Spice, which is the equivalent of the British Mixed Spice. This spice is mainly featured in Caribbean cuisine and has a special place in Middle Eastern, Arab, and some parts of European cuisines. And now it has gradually reached towards US and UK cuisines, making it a key component of many spicy dishes, desserts, and baked goods. When English explorers first discovered it in Jamaica they remarked that it tasted like many different spices, and henceforth, called in allspice. This is because the whole berry has been ground, releasing the oils within, and blending into one, extra flavorful powder.

Use it in baking. Spice cakes, vanilla, hazelnut, or carrot cakes would all pair well with allspice. Though it doesn’t hurt that allspice also boasts some health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. As you know from the introduction, allspice is the berry of the Pimenta dioica plant, and so it comes in the form of a berry. You can get these berries fresh or dried, both of which can be used for their flavor. Allspice is a delicious spice in its own right, deriving from the dried berries of the Pimenta dioica plant, which is a member of the myrtle family.
