Description
Powering this orange-dialed sports diver from Seiko is another trademark of the Japanese manufacturer: the Seiko 4R36 movement.
Note: The model used for this review, the Seiko SBSA009, possesses a specific reference number that denotes it as a Made in Japan iteration. This same style is available under a different reference, SRPD59, when it is not made in Japan. The differences between a Japanese market version of this model and the international market version are minimal and only cosmetic. Throughout this review, I’ll note when there is an aspect unique to this Made in Japan model. It’s a combination of class and extravagance, moderated by its traditional size and silhouette, proving that a conventional tank can be as expressive as any modern fashion watch. Rolex Milgauss White Dial Essentially, it’s a quartz version of Zodiac’s Sea Dragon watch from the 1960s-70s - so yes, another reissue. Orange-dialed dive watches are so distinctive that they almost constitute their own genre. Largely dominated by Doxa and Seiko, over the years Bulova, Gruen, Timex and others have tried it out, but few major league brands have offered an orange dial. Most brands bring the safety-oriented color into their dive watches as markers, bands, chapter rings, bezel inserts and other accents. But Seiko and Doxa have unabashedly let their orange dials scream for decades, and, no matter how many decades go by, orange-dialed dive watches, in turn, scream “The 1970s.” An indelible mark of that era, the orange dial certainly gives the SPRB97 an anachronistic, pre-dive-computer vibe. Perhaps this ‘70s aura contributes to the sense that this watch is a reissue—though we’d have to concede that the first-generation orange Saumrai would also qualify. There are performance advantages to orange dials, including marginally better legibility at depth (though orange light is absorbed almost entirely when submerged to 50 feet). Orange is, however, easy to find in the shallows just off shore, should one plop it into the drink, though a more likely scenario would be locating the thing in the depths of a gear-laden duffle bag. But let’s be honest: most people wear dive watches as lifestyle accessories, so in a majority of instances the orange dial’s duties will end at grabbing people’s attention faster than a traffic cone. In my experience, the SRPB97 is a compelling conversation starter, even among those who aren’t interested in watches. First released in the 90s, the SKX Seiko 5 Sports watches were a modernised version of the classics – updating the reliability and durability of the 1960s originals. The 90s collection offered improved practicality – enhanced water resistance, strengthened crystals along with luminous hands and hour markers. These wearable, loveable values still stay strong in today’s modernised Seiko 5 Sports designs. When reacquainting myself with the Rotary line, the Scuba 7 was one of the first watches to grab my attention. Aside from the attractive design - slightly reminiscent of the Rolex Submariner but with its own unique edge - it has good specs and build quality for the price.
We are also able to offer an exchange to a different product if required, please specify this when returning your product. The sapphire crystal has a box magnifying lens over the date window which isn’t a common feature and it reinforces the Devil Diver’s distinctive appearance. The same can be said of the lume filled tubes that are used for the hour markers. Both are nice features that catch the eye. I’d like to meet the person who chose the design and materials for the Diver’s strap – and beat him with it until he confesses his allegiance to the JLSW (Japanese League of Sadistic Watchmakers). The fact that the finished watch is a stunning design is a bonus. But I don’t want to include it here. It’s neither affordable nor new to you. Along the same vein, the shinier looks of the SRPD59 make it easier to wear with a dressier button-down shirt such as an OCBD, something I wouldn’t really consider with the SKX011.
There’s the marine-grade stainless steel bezel, the Swiss automatic movement, and of course, that whopping 600 meters of water resistance. In 1964, DOXA Watches sent divers into Switzerland’s Lake Neuchatel armed with a rainbow of brightly colored watches. Their goal: find the best hue for underwater visibility. Three years later, the watchmaker released the legendary orange SUB. If horological heritage is your bag, buy a latter day DOXA. If not, consider the Seiko Diver Automatic Orange Dial Men’s Watch. Now why would anyone want to do that? On the other hand, this makes for a rather rigid and bulky strap that can be uncomfortable to wear for an extended period of time. The “wave” design is iconic to Seiko dive watches and many collectors seek it out, however, I was not able to get over the discomfort factor in the time that I wore the SKX011. Before getting on with the comparison, a short bit on the country of origin of each: the orange 5KX used for this article is a Seiko SBSA009; this entails that the model is made in Japan (as the small text on the dial indicates.) This watch is also available in an international market version as the reference SRPD59.
But it’s lazy to include them repeatedly, especially when that isn’t what I bought last time that I wanted an orange dial watch. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation,” color-wheel-pro.com opines. “To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat.” As a Seiko Diver-wearing Paris Hilton might say, that’s hot! In 1953 Zodiac launched the Sea-Wolf and Blancpain the Fifty-Fathoms. The following year Rolex presented the Submariner to the world. These iconic timepieces, each innovative in their own right, were the result of incremental improvements in watch design and building. At the time, Bulova was pushing the existing water resistance limits of their watches. They managed to get their dive models to 666ft. The watch that they created was jokingly referred to as the Devil Diver. Unlike many automatic watches, this model comes with a Seconds-Stop function which allows the wearer to completely halt the movement within the watch. You can never really go wrong with Rolex, and this bright orange Oysterdate Precision is the perfect evidence of that. With a small size of 34mm, it’s lightweight and comfortable. It has a Rolex hand-wound movement and date window, and it’s made from Rolex’s solid 904L stainless steel.
As one of the premier watch brands in the famed Glashütte region of Germany, Nomos has built an excellent reputation for quality and refined style. The Club Campus model also adds a bit of flare to that description with its gorgeous muted orange dial variant. It has the classic ProPilot design, including a lightweight titanium case and bracelet, the caliber 400 Oris automatic movement with a mind-boggling 120-hour power reserve, 100 meters of water resistance, and a comfortable case size of 39mm. The beautiful bracelet also has a foldover clasp, ensuring a safe and secure fit on your wrist. 5. Rolex Oysterdate Precision 6694 Orange Dial The bright orange dial of this “5KX” is undoubtedly its most memorable feature. Aside from its blazing orange color, the dial also boasts a light sunray texture that I had a hard time capturing in the images. Nevertheless, I can assure you its there and it helps the dial to reflect light beautifully.
Seiko SKX011J Specifications & Price
The movement is not incredibly accurate but it certainly gets the job done. Moreover, this is the type of movement that will run for years with minimal maintenance and in lieu of any impacts that it may take. It does have the downside of not having a hand-winding function but alas, this is also a downside that can be modded away by changing it out for a different movement. The SKX011 was also available as a made-in-Japan and an international-market version. The two references were SKX011J and SKX011K, respectively. Orange dial watches garner looks because they’re so rare. Also, if you’re looking for something with extra bright legibility, whether it’s for diving or other low-light situations, then an orange dial watch might be the perfect choice for you.
