Suitable for liquids - Not all scales are suitable for use with liquids, so you’ll need to use a separate measuring jug or opt for scales with an aquatronic mode. Jug scales are great for weighing wet ingredients as well as dry. These use the jug as your bowl, with the weight shown on a digital LCD display, usually found at the top of the handle. Lightweight and compact with a maximum capacity of 3 kg; easily measure your favourite baking ingredients to cook tasty treats.

Kitchen scales are an essential tool for measuring ingredients when cooking or baking. From traditional mechanical scales to digital scales with advanced features, finding the right scale for your needs is essential for successful meal preparation. Here at Salter we have a variety of sizes, styles, and features available, it’s important to consider the type of scale that best fits your needs. It’s another Salter scale, with a stand-out special function: it doubles up as a hygienic full-size glass chopping board (35 x 26cm), rendering it a veritable worktop space saver. Plus, it has a massive maximum weighing capacity of 15kg, so it’s a great one to have if you often find yourself cooking for a crowd. It makes it easy to weigh ingredients straight into even your largest mixing bowl, or heavier bowls attached to food processors. Although digital scales are easier to store and clean and tend to give more accurate results, there's still a market for mechanical scales because they're much nicer to look at – albeit taking up more space. True traditionalists still prefer the centuries-old technology of balance scales, despite them being slow to operate and arguably less accurate. They just look so nice in the kitchen. The Hanson H500 scales, which you may also see labelled as Terraillion, as the latter bought out the former some time ago, have a great retro feel. Their stylish exterior means you can display them on your work surface with pride, although they’re not so big that you can’t store them away. We like that the dial is bigger than on some of the other scales tested, showing both imperial and metric measurements. And, unlike some mechanical scales, the needle isn’t over-sensitive, hurtling forward the moment you add the tiniest amount. While the scale can only be cleaned with a damp cloth, we love the stainless steel bowl, which can be popped in the dishwasher for freshening up after use. Unlike some traditional kitchen scales, the Salter Disc comes with an aquatronic option, too - allowing you to measure liquids without needing to use a measuring jug. It is worth noting, however, that the accuracy is higher on dry ingredients.

The old-fashioned type that works a bit like a see-saw, in that you pop the weights on one side and the ingredients in the bowl on the other and wait for them to balance. Considered to be the traditional way to measure weight. These work by adding ingredients, and therefore weight, to the bowl, which activates a spring that moves the dial on the display to reflect the correct weight. This scale stands out for me because it’s so incredibly compact and portable that it folds away to handheld-size. It could fit into even the most crowded of cutlery drawers (in use, they fold out into a flat tripod shape), and weighs barely anything – perfect for saving space and preventing kitchen clutter. Type: Analog | Dimensions: ‎‎30 x 18 x 18cm‎ | Weight of unit: 400g | Weight capacity: 4kg What we like The rubber feet will protect your countertop and ensure a safe and sturdy base for your ingredients, while the hanging hook is a great addition for simple storage even in smaller kitchen spaces. With a removable, 1 litre dishwasher safe bowl for easy cleaning, the scale can be stored inside the bowl for neat storage afterwards.
