When she realizes she was foolishly naive to think he was committed to a permanent relationship, she departs Nancherrow and enlists in the Royal Navy at the onset of World War II.
This book literally beckons you to sit and have a cup of tea, cozy up on the couch and with the radio playing softly in the background ~~ and this book will take you away.We watch her grow, experience her loves and her losses and in a style that few other authors can match, we see, feel and touch the world she lives in. H. Smith, where Judith’s mother bought her monthly Vogue and came each Saturday to change her library book.
Gus remembers a painting he was immensely fond of depicting a girl standing on the edge of a cliff, looking out to see, her hair blowing in the wind. I could close my eyes and see the Laura Knight image Pilcher described and I knew who Loveday was and who she was to Gus. His latest book is Boy Giant published by Harper Collins Children’s Books and Owl or Pussycat illustrated by Polly Dunbar and published by David Fickling Books. They had spent an inordinate amount of time treading to and from church, and Grandmother had given Judith a prayer-book for a Christmas present.
When they finally are in each other's presence again, the chemistry is still very much present and strong. When they finally take one step together, they were unable to act on it because Toure spent his senior year abroad. At Porthkerris School, they had been notorious for their devilment and wickedness, but since moving on to the County School in Penzance, had been somewhat tamed by a terrifying headmaster, and been forced to settle down to their books and mend their ways. It was a solid Victorian edifice, built of granite blocks, and had three entrances, marked Boys, Girls, and Infants, a legacy from the days when segregation of the sexes was mandatory.
Willis was all bound up with the mystery of Heather’s Uncle Fred who hadn’t got it in him, but whenever Judith broached the matter with her mother, she was met with pursed lips and a change of subject. There are some lovely description of nature and I quite enjoyed them but for most part the writing is noting exceptional. We follow Judith, her friends and family all the way through WWII, which doesn’t leave them unscathed. She is waiting for when her mother will go abroad, staying at school instead and staying with Aunts or friends during the school holidays. They emerged in small groups, jostling and giggling and uttering shrieks of cheerful abuse at each other, before finally dispersing and setting off for home. From Judith to her bestfriend, Loveday Carey-Lewis, the inspiriing Diana, the haunting Gus, the stable Jeremy and the host of minor characters who come to life, this is a riveting read that takes you through the trauma of war and its effects on ordinary people living their lives as best they can. COMING HOME has all elements that a good book has---- well built characters, a big problem, a careful solution, romance, relationships that steadily build, and the change that all main characters' make from the first time you meet them, to the last.
The characters were charming, and the narration was great, so if you're looking for a quick, romantic read, I would encourage you to pick this up!As soon as it ended (and let me tell you- it's an impeccable ending) I still wasn't ready to say goodbye to the characters. Debido a que es una historia muy larga, llegas a conocer y encariñarte con todos los maravillosos personajes, no me hubiera importado una 20 o 30 páginas más y que el final hubiera sido más completo, lo sentí apresurado. A ‘coming of age’ novel is just about my favourite type of book and I felt like I entered into the world of Judith Dunbar and the 1000 or so pages just seemed to turn themselves as I got totally absorbed into Judith’s world and that of her adopted Cornish family. Judith reunites with Carey-Lewis family friend Jeremy Wells, a doctor who has loved her since the day they met, but unexpected circumstances tear them apart. Born in Colombo, Judith Dunbar spends her teenage years at boarding school, while her beloved mother and younger sister live abroad with her father.
