The Pro and Premium 250 Ohm use the same drivers and therefore sound exactly the same except that the clamp strength is slightly tighter for the Pro than the Premium, which changes the sound a tiny bit (more bass). If you stretch the headband a bit on the Pro, it sounds exactly like the Premium look no further. These cans have an incredibly wide soundstage and are very comfortable to listen to for prolonged periods of time. As I alluded to above, switching between these two models was quite revealing of their differences. The 58X feels a touch dark in comparison, with much more fun in its sub and mid-bass response. The 58X has a timbre that's more smooth and inviting, and they're probably a better overall choice for long-session fun listening. HD 6XX - excellent mids, voices and instruments sound really lifelike. The bass rolls off compared to many headphones, but the midbass is somewhat elevated, say around 50 - 100 Hz. Just enough to slightly affect a deeper male voice. The treble also rolls off a bit. This is more noticeable when comparing to other headphones in the same listening session. I find you get adapted to it and it generally isn't a big deal. The Edition has a much softer clamping force than the Pro model, and a slightly less-padded headband. The headband pad is still replaceable, though instead of using the snaps of the Pro version it uses a weird ziploc-bag-style fastener.

The headband, forks, and ear cups use the same basic design language as the 770 and 990, although the outsides of the cups are covered with a metal mesh grill. At first glance, this grill looks like it would be rough and coarse...but it's incredibly smooth to the touch. It's weirdly pleasant to run my fingers along the grill, so smooth is the surface. I was very surprised. It's my second-favorite Beyerdynamic headphone to touch with my hands after the bowling seat plastic on the 770's.The 880's are being marketed as being "Semi-open", in my opinion you should think of them as being 'open' but with a bit of isolation. DT 880's: Open, more treble, wide, less bass (but still enough for my taste),balanced and realistic. Beyerdynamic has a specific vision in making their products: Their products should last long (very long) and should employ quality engineering for precise and accurate sound reproduction. At the end of the cable there's a big sturdy plug with a 3.5mm connector, and Beyerdynamic includes a screw-on unimatch 6.3mm adapter in the box.

Highs: Very are clear, detailed, yet little more than required. I can describe highs not as ‘bright’ but as slightly ‘ hot’ DT 880's have an outstanding soundstage, the 3D imaging surpasses the others in my test, width and depth and even height is revealed in a very pleasing mannor. I heard details i didn't know were there. Soundstage: The DT880’s soundstage is airy, spacious, but not fully circular or 3D soundstage, but more of a 2D like with left and right separation. Depth is moderate. Instrument separation, detail retrieval is very good. According to my observation, these cans sounded good particularly in instrumentals, and classical. Vocals were not great. I can say the DT880’s are not forgiving to poor recordings. Hence these are revealing and resolving. I would prefer to pair DT880’s with a OTL tube amp for music listening, then the mids will open out much better and highs much more sweeter and in control. The above graphs show the square wave and impulse responses of the three DT880 impedance headphones. Here you can see that the 32 ohm DT 880 rings markedly more than the other two headphones. The output impedance of the amplifier I use to test headphones is less than 2 ohms, so the damping factor is about 15 for the 32 ohm Beyers. The 250 ohm DT 880 would have a damping factor of a bit over 100, and the better damping is evident in the reduced ringing of the 250 ohm headphones over the 32 ohm cans. Similarly, the 600 ohm headphone would have a damping factor of about 300, and shows very slightly less ringing. Again, ten to one is adequate; the diminishing return of the larger damping factor of the 600 ohm over the 250 ohm version is evident.Mids are breathtakingly natural and airy, with a "hyper-detailed" and open sound to them. This is thanks to some peaks in the upper mid and treble ranges, aka the infamous " Beyerdynamic Treble." The clamp is loose enough for these to just gently hug your head, which is a little alarming at first coming from clampier headphones. They essentially disappear while you're wearing them, and they don't shift around too much during aggressive head-shaking. You know, for those times when you're randomly shifting your head around while listening to audio. ISOLATION DT 880 - excellent bass, it's exactly how I like it. Very good extension, to below 20 Hz, no midbass bloom. Mids are slightly recessed compared to HD 6XX. There is a treble peak somewhere around 6 to 8 kHz. I have some hearing roll off so I notice it but only sometimes is it intrusive. Some folks rip them off their head because of this. So this headphone is 250 ohms, which means that these cans cannot be driven by a regular mp3 device. The output impediance an ipod could handle is about 32 ohms. But since the beyerdynamic dt 880 are 250 ohms you will need a headphone amplifier to power them to their full potential.

Intro: Beyerdynamic is well known, established &one of the oldest audio brand specializing in the area of headphones and IEM’s. They are headquartered in Germany. Their products are all designed, developed & made in Germany. DT880 line is a very popular and long running headphone offering from Beyer. The coiled cable is permanently fixed to the left driver. I prefer single sided cables for one reason, it's another easy way to tell which side is which in the dark. The cable is about 5ft in length, up to 10ft when stretched out. It is terminated to 3.5mm with a screw on 6.5mm adapter included. The cable is not replaceable but it is securely fixed and durable. As an owner of other headphones with replaceable cables, I think the feature is overrated. Connectors not only wear out, but can sometimes affect sound when moving around or not securely fastened. I have yet to replace a cable on any headphone. If you need more length or you're afraid of damaging the cable, use a headphone extension cord. I really don't see a "need" for a replaceable cable. Unless you plan to go portable with this headphone, in which case there are much better options for that purpose. Every other part can be replaced on this headphone, including the drivers themselves. Finding parts is easy because of their long-standing popularity. This is a big plus for working professionals who are more likely to abuse their gear. It's far too late to do this now, but if I were working at Beyerdyamic I'd change the numbering to put the 880 at the top, just to more accurately express its overall neutrality and place in the lineup. It's the "Best-sounding" of the family, but I think the other two models have a bit more fun in their audio that most listeners will find pleasing. BUT HOW DO THEY COMPARE TO THE 58X? Overall, I can't recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 ohm but if you choose to like it with the right music consumption, I won't be there to hound you.Having a pair of HD202's i decided to buy a pair of decent headphones in the 200€ range with the same amount of detail as the HD25's but with an over-ear design for comfort.

I have the DT-880 Pro (250 Ohm) model and also own and regularly listen to a Hifiman HE-400, Sennheiser HD600, Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (80 Ohm), V-MODA M-80, and others. Most who have done side by side comparisons of the 250 and 600 ohm models find that they sound the same, yet the 600 ohm model has a reputation for being the best sounding, likely because the people using it are pairing it with higher end amps, or possibly just because of "placebo effect". I would and did get the 250 ohm model because it is easier to drive (I can use them without a dedicated amp if I need to, though they sound much better if I do. Difference between Pro and Premium versions: The sliding yoke mechanism on DT880 Pro version is really mediocre, due to compromised design compared to premium version. Pro version has practically nothing to stabilize or hold the yokes, which keep wobbling, colliding and hitting the headband, causing scratches. Comfort: This is definitely a downside for enthusiasts with moderate to larger heads and ears. DT880 cannot accommodate larger ears inside its earpad. .Also, the earpads may cause itching/ discomfort in warmer climates. Unlike the SA5000, the detail isn't in the spotlight, getting in the way of the music.. You get just about the same amount of detail, but it doesn't take away your focus from the music. Detail isn't pushed in your like like the SA5000.
