Description
As mentioned, it seems as though that, outside of a few outliers, most CFexpress memory cards are coming up against the limitations of camera hardware. That only matters if you care about workflow speeds (your camera doesn’t know the difference), but if that’s important to you, it’s hard to argue with how much better the new specification is. The Angelbird reader is also a very high-quality reader with an aluminum casing and comes with a USB-C cable and also a USB Type-A adapter.
You can usually get this reader bundled with Lexar cards and sometimes they offer some significant savings. The Sandisk Professional PRO-READER CFast is a good reader for offloading large amounts of content from CFast cards. versions, but your camera will perform at its best and your workflow once you’re back at your desk will be far faster — just make sure you pick up a card reader that can actually handle the bandwidth requirements. This is good data practice, as it means you can back up more quickly, but is also good for the card, as being able to format memory cards regularly is a good way to prevent data corruption. If you want a compact camera that produces great quality photos without the hassle of changing lenses, there are plenty of choices available for every budget.
BUILT BETTER: The ProGrade Digital Dual SD UHS-II memory card reader is precision manufactured to outlast the toughest conditions you can throw at it and still perform faster than the rest. You have to have to apply your own rubber padding to the bottom of this reader that it comes with, and it also comes with some cable management wraps. It’s slightly less expensive on a per-gigabyte basis than Pergear’s card and there are no downsides in our testing (Pergear’s card was a bit slow to recover after a photo burst while Lexar’s was not). This is a high-quality reader and has a solid build with a plastic casing, and the reader does not heat up the cards to lava temperatures. Overall Prograde makes a nice CFexpress Type B combo reader that works great with Prograde cards but also with the various brands of memory cards that are out there, including all the different UHS-II cards. This ensures a highly effective and silent cooling airflow around the entire reader so your memory card won’t overheat and throttle your speed. So if you are transferring to an external drive, you’ll probably get around 700MB/s on a 10Gbps USB-C connection. The best performer goes to Delkin’s Black Series and Lexar’s Diamond series, with the latter edging the former out just slightly.
