I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII and/or had family members that served. You can't get much better than this first person account, primary source of the war. Ernie Pyle details the lives of everyday men, and the occasional woman, who served overseas in the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, in England, and in the beginnings of the Normandy battles. Two balls later, with Buttler on 71, Ahmed had the chance to run out Buttler at the non-striker's end, but was in no position to gather Vince's return. It would be the Brave's last chance. It means the Originals have the chance of going one better than their defeat in last year's final, while Brave miss out on the opportunity to add to the title they won in 2021.
Vince and Conway were able to re-find the highest gear, helped by an Originals side that dawdled through their 100 balls. Reliant on pace, Originals bowled only 10 balls of Calvin Harrison's spin and missed the cut-off, meaning they had to bowl the final 11 deliveries with an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle.Brave capitalised, taking 61 runs in total from the final 20. Vince ended on 56 from 25, Conway batted through the innings for 51 off 38. They beat Oval Invincibles comfortably in their last group match to finish five points clear of them, only to fluff their lines against the same opponents on the big day. Manchester Originals captain Jos Buttler on BBC Two: "We're through, and that's the main thing. We are disappointed to lose tonight but we're still in it. Southern Brave bowler Tymal Mills on BBC Two: "I would have liked that to have finished 10 or 15 balls earlier but we got the job done.
It was a good throw and a good catch. She caught it like an outfielder. But no sooner did she have it in her arms than the crowd was upon her. Kids and adults both tore at the box, scratched and yelled and grabbed, and in five seconds the box was empty and torn. The result also means that Welsh Fire finish in fourth, as they needed Originals to win to qualify. On performances of Smeed and Brookes: "It's awesome because you want to be performing and winning, but if you're bringing through a few youngsters while you're doing that it's great. Whether you’re wishing for a little ‘me-time’, a pamper day with friends or a weekend away with a loved one, look no further, allow eforea's expert team to take it from here. That honesty comes out especially in his last reports, those from Normandy following D Day. His description of the lost belongings at the shore - a metaphor for lost lives - id powerful as an account of the cost of the operation. In these reports there is less of the corny humour with which Pyle leavened his earlier writings. The description of coming under "friendly fire" bombing is chillingly vivid.
Ernest Taylor Pyle was an American journalist who wrote as a roving correspondent for the Scripps Howard newspaper chain from 1935 until his death in combat during World War II. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944.Sadly, Ernie Pyle was killed by enemy fire near Okinawa in 1945. How wonderful that we have his writings, which document his contributions to the wartime efforts. Brave Men serves as an eyewitness account. If you are a history buff, this book needs to be on your list. Everything war can be, the merciless sorrow of it all, is there in McCullin’s dark, arresting aesthetic – both in his reflective prose and his pin-sharp photographs. McCullin is well-known, of course, for his images, but his words in the book vibrate with an equal power, in my opinion. They are those of a man trying to comprehend what he saw and what he will never be able to unsee. McCullin, knowingly or otherwise, dug out the truth and sought to bring it home for us all to see, in our newspapers, in colour, as loud and as immediate as being there ourselves. McCullin went to places most of us would never go, to document and give a voice to those who had none. Only through the eyes of the war reporter do we bear witness to the truly courageous – the civilians that must deal with war’s oblivion, day in, day out. If that doesn’t sound like bravery, I don’t know what does. Despite their protestations, we must continue to pay tribute to those who still do this job today. + Next steps
With all this to keep you busy and a whole host of entertainment right on your doorstep, we're confident you won't be able to stay for long enough. Southern Brave bowler Tymal Mills on BBC Two: I don't like to shout about it [his birthday] but it was a nice day and a nice present. Birmingham Phoenix captain Moeen Ali: "I think we've won all our games here, last year and today. The crowd certainly help us but we've got some good players as well. On a ground like this, we like batting here." This book is essential and provides a real human feel to the American front in Europe during World War II. So many different aspects of war are so well depicted. As I lay on the straw in the darkness they became mixed up, and I was confused and not quite sure which was which. He also, bless him, wants to ensure that every single soldier he meets gets described and recognized for the sake of their families and friends at home. As someone living three generations after the war, this drives me nuts. We get longer introductions to people we will never interact with in the book again than one would to the main character in most narrative fiction
