Osprey Poco LT Review | Tested by GearLab
One of the features that we really liked about this backpack was the number of handles it has to lift it by, which makes it very easy to manouevre, both when folded and open. Weighing in at 7 pounds 14 ounces, it’s hefty even before you add a child, but the weight is close to average on the market. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. This model is a simplified variation of the Kid Comfort above and includes nice touches for warm days, including extensive use of mesh along the backpanel and baby’s seat area. When determining the ideal child carrier backpack for your needs, the sunshade is a critical item that is often overlooked. In my haste to get out and use it for the first time I didn’t take long enough fitting the carrier to my body. I fit a layer for me and my daughter, a Nalgene, a bottle, a diaper, wipes, a blanket, and snacks with ease. Californian company Osprey started out designing functional and high performance backpacks for all kinds of outdoor pursuits. With multiple adults often sharing carrying duties, adjustability is a key component of child carrier packs. When my wife and I are together, she grabs one and I hold the other as we hoist Finola up to make the process easier.

Whenever venturing out by car, I was often fiddling with the pack for 10 minutes at the parking lot while my girlfriend had to watch and entertain our daughter. If you are looking for the most plush and comfortable baby backpack carrier take a look at the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro ( Review). We put the Poco Plus to the test for this review, and Osprey also makes the pack in a standard Poco model.
The suspension system has a sturdy aluminum frame which ensures that the pack is not “folding” and that the weight gets transferred efficiently from the shoulders to the hips via the hip belt. Both the Osprey Poco and Poco LT utilize Osprey’s double halo harness with front facing arm loops to safely lock your child in place. Overall, Osprey has continued their safety standards in the Poco series to its newest member, the Osprey Poco LT.

The most unfortunate thing about it is that it’s just too long folded up to fit into almost all suitcases. Despite being both roomy and spacious for your child, the frame enables it to fold to an almost flat position, which is great for freeing up boot space. The suspension system is what connects the pack to the wearer or more precisely the back panel, hip belt, frame (optionally) and harness. Both backpacks have the fully adjustable shoulder and torso straps that easily adjusted to allow the packs to be fitted for tall or short wearers. Along the top of the front, there are two zippered pockets: a small one that’s sized right for a wallet or phone and includes a key clip, and a much deeper pocket (it measures roughly 13 inches in height) for storing larger items. In fact, we’ve had no issues with overheating even when temperatures have creeped into the low 80s Fahrenheit. There are a ton of child carriers on the market, and Osprey’s Poco line is designed for outdoor adventures. Otherwise, this is a smaller and lighter pack than most on the market and will comfortably fit most frame sizes. This was helped by the double halo harness that Osprey uses for the Poco LT, with front facing arm loops which are buckled and tightened. The Osprey Poco is similar to our highest rated pack, the Osprey Poco Plus, but the Osprey Poco LT has been designed with a completely different focus – to be lightweight and compact.
Osprey Poco Plus vs. Osprey Poco - The Kid Packer Osprey Poco Plus vs. Osprey Poco - The Kid Packer
Its ErgoRide child cockpit provides a great amount of under leg support to ensure the child’s weight is equally dispersed for extra comfort. Load lifters on the Poco LT offer classic Osprey pack comfort by reducing the weight/pressure on the shoulders. To be fair, the design is a significant jump forward from prior generations and still is decently comfortable, but it doesn’t match its primary competitor in this respect. My wife and I gave the fully featured Poco Plus a season-long test and found it to be noticeably better-cushioned than the prior generation.
The Poco LT also does not include mesh side pockets for the placement of a phone with a white noise app to help drown out surrounding sounds. Some competitors, including Deuter’s Kid Comfort, require four buckles and some reaching into the top or sides of the cockpit to strap in, but the Osprey’s design is fast and simple. We imagine larger hands will struggle even more than we did, which is something to consider for men with larger hands.
