Instead, book 2 (the weakest of the trilogy in my opinion) is awkwardly divided up and given heightened importance. Random House produced unabridged audiobooks of each His Dark Materials novel, read by Pullman, with parts read by actors including Jo Wyatt, Steven Webb, Peter England, Stephen Thorne and Douglas Blackwell. If you don't see behind the Church, you don't understand why they are so fixated on hunting down a young girl, and you also miss out on why she is so important. But to design a poster for someone else's production is a very different responsibility, made no less daunting by the scale of these particular plays.
The cast will be headed by Dominic Cooper as Will, Niamh Cusack as Serafina Pekkala, Timothy Dalton as Lord Asriel, Patricia Hodge as Mrs.Then, when I was looking in Paradise Lost for the title of the trilogy, I came across this marvellous phrase, 'His dark materials', which fits in so well with dark matter. I do wonder how an audience who’s not familiar with the books would react to the play version, especially the relentless pace of the action. Damon is the only one with a clear picture in his mind's eye of the visuals, helped by Pete Woodward as the set designer.
The revival has now ended, and there are no plans to bring it back for a third time--we will keep this section of the site online as an archive of the information relating to the play. For Lyra and Will, its two central characters, it's a coming of age and a transforming spiritual experience. You can obviously pick up many of these allusions from the stage, but I can't think of any recent fiction that depends more on an intertextual complicity with the reader.
Two young people and their dæmons, with everything at stake, find themselves at the centre of a terrifying manhunt. The play was successful and was revived (with a different cast and a revised script) for a second run between November 2004 and April 2005.
The success of the show brings a second run, with a new cast and some amendments of the script, from December 2004 to April 2, 2005.There is much to admire in the staging; yet the result, inevitably, is like a clipped hedge compared to Pullman's forest. Cynthia Grenier, in the Catholic Culture, said: "In the world of Pullman, God Himself (the Authority) is a merciless tyrant. The rose window on the north side of the transept is the most beautiful of the cathedral's ancient windows. All of the power and bite of the novels with none of the watered-down pandering to American Christians that ruined the movie. It is available to watch at the National Theatre Archives in London for free with a booked appointment.
The cover of the book has two lines on a bottom saying: BASED ON THE NOVELS BY PHILLIP PULLMAN, ADAPTED BY NICHOLAS WRIGHT, which are missing from the image on this page. The usual Bench stalwarts acquit themselves more than admirably, but the big surprises come in the form of two youngsters. By July 2018, Dafne Keen had been provisionally cast as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby and Clarke Peters as the Master of Jordan College.Wright's play is far superior to Pullman's novel, in my opinion, even if he does cut the best character from the book, Mary Malone (he replaces her with Seraphina, the witch, whose part is significantly increased in this version). He explains how the title came about: "The notion of dark matter struck me as an intensely poetic idea, that the vast bulk of the universe is made up of stuff we can't see at all and have no idea what it is. has similarities to the Christianity of 'our own universe', but also crucial differences…[it] is based not in the Catholic centre of Rome, but in Geneva, Switzerland, where the centre of religious power, narrates Pullman, moved in the Middle Ages under the aegis of John Calvin". The thrust of the story is to show Lyra and Will reversing the fall of man, embracing knowledge and experience and defeating submissive obedience to a deity. His dream of establishing a Republic of Heaven leads him to use his power to raise a grand army from across the multiverse to rise up in rebellion against the forces of the Church.
