Description

If your soil is tested ahead of time and it turns out to have higher levels of alkalinity you will find it very difficult to improve the soil enough to successfully grow Rhododendrons. If this is the case you can try growing your Rhododendrons in a pot that is planted in ericaceous compost. Choosing the right type of Rhododendron for the right place Rhododendrons can be damaged by windy weather and this can result in damage to the flowers, or cause the leaves to become scorched by sunlight, which is why it is recommended that you plant them somewhere they are protected from cold winds. If the leaves are not falling off but they are drooping it could be the result of severe cold weather. If you are experiencing a cold snap and your leaves are drooping then they will return once the conditions improve and the weather warms up a little. Once you have evaluated your rhododendron bush and have conducted a soil test, you should have a pretty clear idea of what your soil needs to best support your plant. The centres of diversity are in Asia, though rhododendrons are also native to parts of North America and Europe. 3 Rhododendron. (n.d.-b). Global Conservation Consortia. An acidic soil is essential, ideally humus-rich, moist yet free draining. If you have an alkaline soil, we recommend growing rhodos in a container, rather than trying to alter the acidity of your soil, which is not straightforward as the change is only temporary. Rhododendrons don't like having wet feet; in fact, soggy, waterlogged ground is the most common cause of failure. If you have a heavy clay soil, plant your rhododendron in a mound of improved soil as described below. On the flip-side, rhododendrons do like lots of moisture so avoid planting under the eves of building were rainwater won't find it's way to their roots. Azaleas are a bit more forgiving of soil conditions but again acidity is key.

Rhododendron Propagation

Avoid planting too close to large trees, hedges and shrubs which will steal moisture and nutrients from the surrounding soil, as well as walls and fences. Look at the eventual spread of your preferred variety to determine how much space to leave between your plants and surrounding objects in your garden. Biozome helps create optimal soil conditions by improving soil texture, water retention, and penetration – all which promote plant growth. Yet another use for ericaceous compost is mulch to help keep the soil moist, control weeds, and protect rhododendrons against icy weather. Why Is Ericaceous Compost Good For Growing Rhododendrons? Holly-tone recommends plants should be fertilized using this product at the full rate once in the early spring and then again at a half rate in the fall. Final Thoughts…

aeration often become chlorotic from malnutrition. To improve soil aeration the best amendment is organic matter, One of the reasons that people notice yellowing of the leaves on their Rhododendron is because they use tap water which is too hard. If at all possible, collect rainwater throughout the year and use that to water your Rhododendrons. If that runs out you can always go to tap water for a month or two in the hottest parts of the year, something we have previously mentioned. Feeding

Plant Overview

If your rhododendron bush exhibits any of these telling symptoms, there is a good chance that your soil is deficient in one or more essential nutrients and would benefit from a fertilizer treatment. Rhododendrons need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to grow, so when one or more of these nutrients are unavailable, the plant struggles to thrive. Rhododendron flower buds start forming in late summer. A short period of dry conditions at this time may cause flower buds to fail to form, or buds may only partially form, drying up and dropping unopened the following spring When first growing rhododendrons, you are probably attracted to the most brightly coloured hybrids, but, gradually, the charm and beauty of species rhododendrons overtakes the glamour of hybrids. There’s another option for gardeners with soil on the wrong side of the pH scale who yearn for a rhododendron-filled yard: planting the shrubs in ericaceous compost in pots. This is the way to go if your soil is strongly alkaline. If you tried growing rhododendrons in neutral or alkaline soil, they’d likely develop a nutritional deficiency. This is because these shrubs can’t use iron and manganese in soils with pH levels of 7.0 and up.
