Lactose-free formula Unsure of how to eat soy protein powder? As with other kinds of protein powder, it can be used to make protein shakes or added into meals to increase your protein intake. Soak ten ounces of soybeans in water overnight. Then boil these beans in twelve cups of water for ten minutes. Blend the water and soybeans together until smooth, then simmer for another forty minutes. If you like, you can add a pinch of salt or sugar to taste. When you finish simmering the soybeans, strain the mixture through cheesecloth to remove solids. You can store the soymilk for up to a week — about as long as dairy milk lasts.

Soy milk is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are “healthy” fats that your body cannot form on its own. Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Soy milk is still being studied for its effect on these diseases, but soy in general is one of the best non-animal sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Formula milk provides babies with the nutrients they need to grow and develop. However, it does not have the same health benefits as breastfeeding for you and your baby. For example, it cannot protect your baby from infections. First infant formula (first milk) Milk and dairy foods are good sources of nutrients, so do not cut them out of your or your child's diet without first speaking to a GP or dietitian. Milk and dairy products, such as cheese and yoghurt, are great sources of protein and calcium. They can form part of a healthy, balanced diet. The soya milks all tasted much the same really. The Tesco one was a slightly different colour so it looked more like dairy milk but that didn't really make me like it any more than the others. The only one I wasn't keen on was the Asda milk. Different kinds of goats' milk formula are available in pharmacies and shops. They are produced to the same nutritional standards as cow's milk-based formula. This next option offers you something a little different from the previous powders; a soy protein concentrate powder. This type of formula contains cows' milk proteins that have already been partly broken down (partially hydrolysed). This is supposed to make it easier to digest and help prevent digestive problems such as colic and constipation. However, there's no evidence for this.

Soya formula is made from soya beans, not cows' milk. It's occasionally used as an alternative to cows' milk formula for babies who have cows' milk allergy.

Lactose intolerance can cause symptoms such as bloating and diarrhoea. It does not cause severe reactions. Cows' milk allergy

In fact, now that we’re on the subject, we should discuss the potential benefits that soy has for people with diabetes. Soy products contain isoflavones - phytoestrogens derived from plants with estrogenic activity. This product is an unflavoured soy protein powder, common with other soy protein isolate powder products, so don’t be afraid to experiment with your protein shake if you want a more flavoursome taste! Babies can eat pasteurised full-fat cheese from 6 months old. This includes hard cheeses such as mild cheddar cheese, cottage cheese and cream cheese. Even within the categories ‘whey’ and ‘soy’, the quality of protein powders will still differ from brand to brand. Cows' milk should not be given as a drink until a baby is 1 year old. This is because it does not contain the balance of nutrients babies need.

You don’t have to worry and think ‘how much soy protein per day should I eat and drink?’, as you’d have to consume an awful lot of this protein powder to see any serious side effects. At the same time, even having the odd soy protein shake will have some benefit and will help you to swap meat and dairy out of your diet. Butter is high in fat and saturated fat. It can often be high in salt too, so try to eat it less often and in small amounts. But these cheeses can be used as part of a cooked recipe as listeria is killed by cooking. Baked brie, for example, is a safer option. What is pasteurisation? Drinking soy milk also provides you with an extra dose of fiber, keeping you feeling fuller for a longer time. Brain Health

But there are some cheeses and other dairy products that you should avoid during pregnancy, as they may make you ill or harm your baby. It's important to take extra care when making up and storing these products as powdered formula is not sterile and making it up at lower temperatures will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain. After the age of 2, children can gradually move to semi-skimmed milk as a drink, as long as they're eating a varied and balanced diet and growing well.
