Superintendent Meredith spots some clues which make him think it is murder and sets out to prove it. Thank you very much for your further recommendations – some I have heard of, but I will take a look at the other names too. The Lake District Murder is from the British Library’s excellent Golden Age of Crime reissue project, which gives new life to a range of books from the 1920s and 1930s, all written by superb authors whose names are largely forgotten to our modern world. Now we are all off on a hunt for answers--but the questions keep changing as one theory after another is investigated and discarded.

Jason Pike said: 'We understand that he was shot dead while out cycling which he did most mornings to keep fit.Meredith’s first impression is that Jack Clayton, who owned a garage outside the town of Keswick, committed suicide, ending his workday by gassing himself inside his car. The focus was on the mechanics and technicalities of the investigation and seeing justice done for the victim. One thing that is also very apparent is the things the police do that they would never get away with today.

That’s not necessarily a criticism, and if you want to experience the Golden Age of Crime Fiction there’s no doubt it’s worth a read… but if you were to pick just one of the British Library Crime Classics, or just one Golden Age novel, I wouldn’t recommend one of Bude’s to be it. Do you know of any books that might be interesting reads that would provide me with the insight I am looking for? And Daniel Kind, the historian, wants to uncover the secret of the strange garden at his own cottage. He later lived in Loose, Kent, and after that near Rye, East Sussex, and enjoyed golf and painting but never learned to drive although that did not stop him apparently offering advice to his wife when she was driving! In Dead Ground (2021) Poe investigates a man beaten to death with a baseball bat in backstreet brothel in Carlisle. This is a time and place where almost everyone (school children through working adults) goes home for the midday meal, so we do encounter Mrs Meredith a time or two.

The Lake District Murder by John Bude – Review

After the discovery of the body the story moves in a painstaking police procedural manner but with the nostalgic setting and involving step by step detection I was totally involved . The most recent in the series, Book 8, is The Crooked Shore (2021) with DCI Hannah Scarlett hunting a killer against the backdrop of local Lakeland legends. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one. Witnesses today described horrific scenes as the cab driver shot his victims in the head at point blank range and gunned down others at random through the shattered windscreen of his car. Sorry to say this as I do like my old crime classics and can normally forgive them the quirks that have changed over time.

All becomes clear in time, but not before John Bude has led readers through a rousing investigation, full of unexpected twists and turns, set against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District. She must also try to have her broken pelvis, fractured skull, and a broken rib heal; as well as nearly drowning. Heidi Klum reveals behind-the-scenes look of THAT Peacock Halloween costume (which took SIX HOURS to complete!
