They can be used to refer to both boys and girls, and there’s no way of guessing who they’re referring to unless a pronoun, a proper name or any similar kind of information is added. Another example of personification is thinking about the Earth and the Moon as females, but the Sun as masculine. About 30 years ago, some people began objecting to the use of he in this way, saying that it did not include women and was sexist. So some people began to use he or she and him or her instead of he. The main problem with this construction is that it can be very awkward ("If the student wants a copy of his or her transcript, he or she should go to the Registrar's Office.") or its use is inconsistent within the same sentence ("If the student wants a copy of his or her transcript, they should go to the Registrar's Office."). To try to make it less awkward, writers sometimes use the shortened forms s/he for "she or he" or him/her for "him or her." This is not as awkward in writing, but it can still be awkward in spoken English.

Gender expression is how a person presents gender outwardly, through behavior, clothing, voice or other perceived characteristics. Society identifies these cues as masculine or feminine, although what is considered masculine or feminine changes over time and varies by culture. So, excluding the exceptions you’ll see in the next section, use it for animals whose gender you don’t know, animals you don’t have feelings for and smaller animals like insects. Your teacher may have told you this just to make things easier for you. Or maybe they were just trying to make things easier for them. Gender identity is one's own internal sense of self and their gender, whether that is man, woman, neither or both. Unlike gender expression, gender identity is not outwardly visible to others.

You don’t need to worry about these reasons, just remember that the following two lists of nouns are special: Inanimate nouns that are traditionally considered masculine Mommy-to-Bee Bumble Bee Gender Neutral Yellow Baby 5x7 Baby Shower Invites - 24 Invites and 24 White Envelopes Honey Bee - Shaped Fill-In Invitations - Baby Shower or Birthday Party Invitation Cards with Envelopes - Set of 12 Dana lied so she would not have to go to school. (You wouldn’t say, “ Dana lied so Dana would not have to go to school.”) In other words, some words—like “boy”—change depending on the gender of the person you’re talking about. So if you’re referring to a male child, you’d say “boy,” but if the child is female, you’d say “girl.”

O'Hara says their family and friends still struggle with getting the pronouns right — and sometimes O'Hara struggles to remember others' pronouns, too. These boy or girl quotes can tie into your themed Gender Reveal. They’re cute and simple and get the excitement pumping for your big reveal! If this had survived till today, we’d probably be saying things like se man (the man), seo woman (the woman) and þæt ship(the ship)—surprisingly, ships were neuter in Old English, but that’s a story for another day. Metaphorical gender GREAT FOR ANY GENDER REVEAL PARTY OR BABY SHOWER: Boy Bee Gender Reveal Scratch-Off Cards can be used at traditional baby showers and gender reveal parties. Or use gender reveal scratch-off cards to reveal baby’s gender for the first time at a baby sprinkle party or an event with coworkers. Whether you are hosting a celebration full of friends and family or small gathering of close relatives, Gender Reveal Scratch-Off cards are a great way to let everyone in on the big reveal.

Some writers get around this problem by using the third-person plural pronoun they instead ("If the student wants a copy of their transcript, they should go to the Registrar's Office."). But many grammarians object to this use, since there is no number agreement between the antecedent (in this case, "the student") and the pronoun ( they). Instead, grammarians have historically said that the pronoun he in all its forms should be used when the antecedent that the pronoun refers to could be either gender. English has plenty of nouns that refer to both males and females. Some people call this type of words neuter (like our child above), but grammatically speaking, they should be considered common nouns.
