Things to do In Borrowdale The Graves family welcomed ‘The Borrowdale Hotel’ into their unique group of 6 Lake District Hotels in 2008. Since then, the hotel has been transformed by ongoing refurbishments, remaining sympathetic to its character and allowing tradition and personality to pervade – like the original 41 room bells that hang in the hall. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 438 people, living in 137 households. [2] [3] The 2011 Census showed that the population had declined to 417 residents among 128 households. [4] Economy [ edit ] At the heart of the Lake District, you will find the Borrowdale valley. Idyllic, yet spectacular, this varied landscape starts with England’s highest peaks, and ends with open plains that surround the southern end of Derwent Water. Near the centre of the valley, the surrounding peaks draw close, and the valley narrows, creating an imposing gorge that is known as the Jaws of Borrowdale.

It is hard to believe that this valley, now part of the National Park, was once a hive of industrial activity with iron smelting, charcoal burning, and mining for copper and graphite. Scattered hamlets reflect the Nordic influence in their names, while stone walls and vernacular buildings chronicle centuries of farming. Today farming struggles to make a living and visitors play an important role in sustaining the local community. But it's not always raining there and on fine days you can explore fellside paths to Styhead and Sprinkling tarns, admire the venerable Borrowdale yews immortalised in a poem by William Wordsworth and marvel at the remains of the Elizabethan wadd (graphite) mines on the fellside - once the most expensive mineral ever mined in Britain.
