Add razor-sharp banter and you can lay the smart money on another Stroud winner.”— Bulletin, starred reviewSet in a broken, future England, where gunfights and monsters collide, this is the exciting first title in a phenomenal fantasy teen series by the bestselling children's novelist. We are told that Albert (the other main character) has a dark power, which made me imagine that it may be really monstrous and a bit too dark for me. However, it wans’t, and although this book has its scary and dark bits, it is written very well and gently by Jonathan Stroud. Right from the first paragraph the reader knows that it is going to be a gentle yet gritty book. Overall, I absolutely loved every single second of this book. it had everything I love in a YA fantasy. This is my first Stroud novel and it will not be my last. Beginning with the world-building: I really envy Stroud’s imagination. He has a gift for taking a premise (Genies! Ghosts that only kids can see! Dystopian Britain!) and truly following the implications for how society would evolve to deal with it. In this book, we are plunged into a dystopian Britain that has splintered into seven kingdoms, mostly with towns dotted among the wilderness – and it’s tough to say which is more savage, the society in the towns or the lawlessness outside them.Tom Daley gifts Gillian Anderson with a multi-coloured crocheted PENIS and jumper to wear on her show Sex Education
