Defusionarse con los pensamientos que nos atormentan, aceptando ese dolor que nos provoca la mente y nos impide disfrutar la vida que queremos vivir. If someone took a series of snapshots, sometimes the bus might be facing north, or south, or even west, even though all the while this is a journey to the east. We have been given the great gift of being able to adapt our thinking and behavior intentionally, and to change our circumstances deliberately, to better suit healthy, purposeful living. Just as Stoicism is the philosophical precursor to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Buddhism is the philosophical precursor to ACT.

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance

This manual, firmly based on cutting-edge psychological science and theory, details an innovative and rapidly growing approach that can provide you with the power to transform your very experience of life. For me, this book was good, but I was a little put off by the constant exercises required of its ‘workbook’ format. Most definitely an essential text that should accompany all individuals as they traverse their teen years. And I think the mark of any bad self-help book and definitely any bad psychotherapy is a one size fits all approach -- believing so deeply as Hayes does that the tenets of this book repudiate other ways people try to help themselves. Becoming oriented is not about rumination and worry, but about becoming more aware of what is happening here and now in the present moment. Though, as also noted within, this not-simple paradigm is more so due to it being so contrary to common wisdom concerning our mental and emotional lives, rather than being inherently complex.

If you are fighting to be ‘right,’ even if it doesn’t help move you forward, assume the White Queen has decreed that you are ‘right. with it, enough to know that I want my own copy, so I can mark it all up (it is a workbook, after all), next time I'm feeling the need.

This is a slow, slow read, with too many exercies that do not lead you very far into understaning the authors aims. If we check to see whether our efforts are working, we will remember what we are trying not to think and we will think it. In the deepest sense, consciousness itself contains the psychological quality that we are conscious—timelessly and everywhere. The first step may be to consider self-knowledge, truthfulness, and other building blocks on the road to personal growth.

It does this by constantly categorizing present events, relating them to analyses of the past and predictions of the future and evaluating what has been or might be obtained by action. Whenever your mind wanders off from the “rectangular shape” of your breath—as it inevitably will—gently bring your attention back to the shape of your breath.
