Description

Welcome, mighty Barbarian, to the land of your youth! The tribal elders have summoned you to protect the Northland from great danger. The Frozen Horror, an evil creature long thought banished, has burst forth from its icy tomb to await Zargon's command. Component-wise, I really like the attention given to the little thematic extras, like the new door design and the thematic dice. The miniatures look like great designs, much more in line with the original concepts as updates, than did the core or first two expansions. If I were to point to a production missed opportunity here, it would be that AH could have designed a new thematic game board (As a separate standalone product). It's not too late but I don't see it happening. In the HeroQuest: The Frozen Horror expansion, players must destroy the evil Frozen Horror, a ferocious creature that threatens the icy realm of the Northlands. The powerful Barbarian must survive a series of dangerous solo quests, with success bringing other heroes to join him.

The Frozen Horror expansion global launch date is August 1st, 2022, though it may be available in your region ahead of schedule. We’re so excited for this release that we’ve put together an introductory solo quest for any hero to attempt, along with additional playtest rules and errata. I also love the frozen doors, new character sheets, and colored dice! If this is real and all the future expansions look like this, we're in for a real treat! INCLUDES 10 EXCITING QUESTS: The Frozen Horror expansion includes full-color tiles, artifact cards, and quests that players haven't seen in previous editions of the HeroQuest Game System For the heroes, there are new inventory items to spend your hard-earned gold and new quest items to earn; just be sure to fully explore each dungeon to find those secret rooms. One common issue experienced by many parties playing through the various campaigns is that it is possible to get to a point where you’ve obtained all of the good items from the inventory shop, and you end up with mountains of gold you can’t use. The Frozen Horror helps answer this by introducing Mercenaries (hired help) available for a single quest. These can take the form of the Scout, Swordsman, Archer or Halberdier, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Each are fully represented by miniatures and are controlled by the player who hired them. There are also multiple copies of each mercenary to allow players to hire several of each type if desired. No pictures of cards yet... conspicuous by their absence... still working on them? I thought I was going a little overboard when I printed my customs with an icey-blue tint to them but that would fit perfectly with their overall theme here. Blue box instead of red, so no confusion with the original there. Magic ice tiles have a little dandelion design instead of the generic text ("magic ice") placed over an ice tile, I can get behind that change. This quest includes a set of playtest rules for bringing an animal companion on your solo adventures. A popular archetype in sword and sorcery tales is the friend of beasts. Great cats, horses, hawks, and all manner of small clever critters have a history of thwarting the machinations of foul sorcerers. We wanted to take this opportunity to playtest some new companion rules and tell a story of how your hero first encountered one of these faithful animals on their journey to the frozen north.

Having the first three quests a solo experience only resulted in an ‘oh, so we can’t all play?’ moment as the rest of the party had to watch one player go through the dungeon on their own. Speaking of the Guardian Knight, that "Barbarian" looks very much like one, down to the pose and choice of weapons/armor, since if I recall correctly, those characters were wearing fur trimmed outfits already (guess the cover is just depicting the game system barbarian, like the original did). A concession to the disgruntled fans perhaps? finely-detailed plastic figures (1 Female Barbarian, 6 Mat-arms, 12 Weapons [3 Crossbows, 3 Halberds, 3 Swords, 3 Sword and Shields], 3 Ice Gremlins, 2 Polar Warbears, 2 Yeti, 1 Frozen Horror) Considering the number of miniatures you get, it is a very compact box. It complements the base game nicely, making all monsters and companions easily accessible. In Hero Quest fashion, all items fit into plastic moulded compartments. It stops everything moving around in transit, but some miniatures can feel too snug and offer a small challenge to get out. The RulebookGreat online store for board games. They always arrive perfectly and undamaged which is important to me. Zatu has an excellent range of games and for most of them the best prices too. Delivery is always fast and I have never received a game in bad condition. 10/10 would recommend. The cards and booklets in this chilling expansion feature artwork that takes players' imaginations into a frozen world filled with monsters, deadly traps, and more The rules are straightforward to get up to speed on, but given the small book, don’t expect too much room for pictures to break up the walls of text. Expect to spend a good few minutes reading through all of the additions and new aspects before you play. Game Setup
