Description

As Dutch gin enjoys a revival among spirits enthusiasts and mixologists worldwide, it remains a symbol of the Dutch spirit of innovation, craftsmanship, and cultural pride. With every sip of jenever, one is not just enjoying a drink but partaking in a centuries-old tradition that has shaped the landscape of spirits and continues to evolve and inspire. Whether one is sipping on a classic oude jenever or exploring the nuances of a craft jonge expression, Dutch gin offers a complexity and richness that is as enduring as the Dutch spirit itself. After distillation, oude jenever is often aged in oak barrels, which mellows the spirit and imparts subtle wood notes. The length of ageing can vary, with some of the more premium expressions spending several years in barrels, developing richness and depth. Jonge jenever, on the other hand, is typically bottled soon after distillation, ensuring a fresher, brighter profile. Jonge jenever has a neutral taste, like vodka, with a slight aroma of juniper and malt wine. Oude jenever has a smoother, very aromatic taste with malty flavours. Oude jenever is sometimes aged in wood; its malty, woody and smoky flavours resemble whisky. Different grains used in the production process – such as barley, wheat, spelt and rye – produce different flavoured jenevers. The taste is sometimes enhanced by adopting barrels previously used for American whiskey.

Dutch gin is a spirit made from juniper berries and other botanicals, such as coriander, cardamom, angelica root, cinnamon, ginger, licorice root, lemon peel, and orange peel. These ingredients are steeped in alcohol before being distilled into clear liquid form. The result is a strong-tasting spirit with notes of juniper berries and other spices. As for gluten, many brands and experts will argue that the distillation process removes gluten from the grain. However, people with celiac disease are probably better off not taking the risk as there have been reports that it causes adverse reactions. Apart from oude and jonge Jenever, there are different distillation processes and ingredients for gin. Korenwijn (grain wine) for example has matured in an oak cask for some years.

Once the flavor has properly bonded, the 8 components are then re-distilled separately in a Pot Still, to highlight the characteristics of the botanical infusion. Alexander: " As genever was originala Dutch drink many Dutch gins are strong on juniper berries and many herbs are used. Additional The Netherlands is a very sea focussed country and coastal gins are very popular where botanicals are used which are available near the coastal areas." In either case, a second process will follow where juniper and other herbs are steeped in the base spirit before being distilled. While gin can sometimes be made using vapour infusion, most brands will undertake the same process.

The maceration time for each botanical is ± 15 days, before distillation. The exact time is different for each botanical. O'Keefe JH, Bhatti SK, Bajwa A, Dinicolantonio JJ, Lavie CJ. Mayo Clin Proc. 2014;89(3):382-93. doi:10.1016/j.mayocp.2013.11.005 While gin is made from distilled grain spirit, it doesn’t contain gluten peptides and is therefore gluten-free and safe for coeliacs.
