Description

Prosphora is a loaf of leavened bread that is used in Orthodox Christian liturgies. It is also used in Greek Catholic liturgies. It is different from the Western Catholic tradition of an unleavened host. It is made from four basic ingredients. Silence is particularly appropriate within the Prayers of Penitence and of Intercession, before the Collect, in response to the reading of the Scriptures, after the Eucharistic Prayer and after the distribution. 9 Notices

Benedict, Philip (2002). Christ's Churches Purely Reformed. New Haven: Yale University Press. p.205. ISBN 978-0300105070. Eventually, while the Eastern Churches maintained the principle that the Church should keep to the local language of the community, Latin became the language of the Western Church. Whenever possible, all three readings are used at Holy Communion on Sundays. When only two are read, the minister should ensure that, in any year, a balance is maintained between readings from the Old and New Testaments in the choice of the first reading. The psalm provided relates to the first reading in the lectionary. Where possible it should be used after that reading. Although initially the Eastern and Western Christians shared the same faith, the two traditions began to divide after the seventh Ecumenical Council in 787 CE and is commonly believed to have finally split over the conflict with Rome in the so called Great Schism in 1054. If you are going to serve this bread for communion, know that you can freeze it whole and then thaw it out completely on the counter still wrapped.

The Christian Congregation, a Pentecostal denomination, uses leavened loaves of bread. Among those who use the unleavened hosts, there is a great deal of variation: some are square or triangular rather than round, and may even be made out of whole wheat flour. This is a lovely recipe for milk and honey bread, which I thought was appropriate given the circumstances. The sermon is an integral part of the Liturgy of the Word. A sermon should normally be preached at all celebrations on Sundays and Principal Holy Days. The Orthodox Church calendar begins on September 1st and ends on August 31st. Each day is sacred: each is a saint's day, so at least one saint is venerated daily. They bake week after week, whether in bliss or not. In my parish, we recruit and schedule these volunteers just like any other liturgical role. We should give thanks to God for his redemption of the world through his Son Jesus Christ and, as we remember Christ’s death for us and receive the pledge of his love, resolve to serve him in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life.
