The subsequent history of the treasure turns out to involve several more mutinies and maroonings with the same motivation. He has written a book which will be a source of delight to children of future generations well as his own, one that ranks with such masterpieces in this genre The Water Babies, Alice in Wonderland and Sylvie and Bruno. Kay lives in a vast old country house, and is looked after by an unpleasant duo: the oily and egregious Sir Theopompous and the petulant and punitive Sylvia Daisy Pouncer. He is remembered as the author of the classic children's novels The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights, two novels "Captain Margaret" and "Multitude and Solitude" and a great deal of memorable poetry, including "The Everlasting Mercy", and "Sea-Fever", from his anthology Saltwater Ballads. Determined to recover the long-lost family treasure, Kay finds himself in a race against the evil Abner Brown. Very good indeed in the scarce dustwrapper which is very good, lightly spotted on rear panel and flaps, slightly frayed at head of spine and with faint scratches to front panel and a fingernail-size chip to bottom edge of rear panel. But not all the creatures that haunt the night are friendly: a coven of witches is also after the treasure, led by the scheming Abner Brown and the sinister Mrs Pouncer, and woe betide anyone who gets in their way.Pastedowns, endpapers and most of the pages are also foxed in places, with a dampstain noted on page 239. First printing (Same date on TP and CP; states Published November, 1927 with no additional printings listed). Which is another way of saying that the burdens of the past can only be redeemed by the life of the present. First published in 1927, The Midnight Folk is still in print; but it is less well known than its sequel, The Box of Delights, which many remember from a successful BBC TV adaptation in the 1980s. A great many incidental characters and places are shared across Masefield's novels, although the fine details of such recurrences are often contradictory from novel to novel.

Soon Kay is engaged in a thrilling quest that begins each night as the clock strikes twelve, taking him into the enchanted and dangerous world of the Midnight Folk: pirates, highwaymen, talking animals, and a gang of witches led by none other than Sylvia Daisy (in cahoots, as in The Box of Delights, with the arch-villain Abner Brown). Gossipy Hens: Kay's governess's social circle includes a flock of them, with names like Mrs Gossip, Mrs Tattle, and Mrs Scatternews.

Two of the greatest children’s books ever written’ – The Times on Box of Delights and The Midnight Folk. Your Size May Vary: The relative sizes of Kay and the various Midnight Folk is never nailed down, and seems to vary according to convenience. In her zeal to educate Kay on the finer points of Latin grammar, Sylvia Daisy has even taken away all of Kay’s toys.
