Pre-Tomb of the Cybermen: Before freezing themselves on Telos, the Cybermats had crystalline eyes and antennae. The Cybermats originated on Mondas during the earliest phases of Cyberman history, when most of the planet had not yet been converted. During the early years of the Third Cyberwar, weapons-grade Cybermen sent hundreds of Cyber Legion Cybermats to attack Space Station Hamlyn. The described life-support system cables match those on Nerva Station in The Ark in Space, and are probably a standardized format. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions.

From this point forward, I intend to date each serial as well as possible; I’m primarily using Lance Parkin’s A History of the Universe, but checking other sources for consensus where I can, as the book is somewhat out of date. They later helped in the invasion of the Wheel and poisoned the crew of Nerva when Cybermen attempted to destroy Voga. He reveals that the Cybermen were created for only one purpose: to activate and control a large propulsion system on the surface, which will save Mondas from the nebula by rerouting the planet’s trajectory. I’ve opted to go with the latest date given, 2079 AD, as the events of The Moonbase occur in 2070 AD, and the Cybermen here recognize the Doctor from that occasion. Less obvious is how the human- and android-informed command computer recognized him from a scan, having probably never encountered the Eighth Doctor in any way; but then, it’s hard to say how long he has lived at this point, or how many adventures he has had, or where that information originally came from. Before the CyberTelosians froze themselves on Telos, some Cybermats had crystalline eyes and antennae through which they received commands. I found that a fair bit of debate exists as to the placement of this episode, but most sources place it in the second half of the 21 st century. The Cyber-tombs on Telos had tunnels for the Cybermats to move from the tombs to the main control rooms. Mechanising Worms, which were used by the Cybermen of the Cyber-Mainframe, ( AUDIO: Telepresence, Code Silver) were highly reminiscent of Cybermats, in particular the Cybermats used on Nerva Beacon.

They are diverted, however, by the presence of the Cybermat; it chews into the TARDIS console, seeking the power source, until it fries itself—but the damage is done.Cybermats were also developed on Mondas before the last surviving underground Mondasian city been converted. On GSO Arctic Drilling Station in 2010, most of the crew had been converted into Cyberslaves by the Cybermat's nanovirus. Some technical details: This is a long story, clocking in at more than a half hour per part, with a total running time of about two and a quarter hours.

The Doctor and Jansen find a Cyber-conversion chamber, which was deactivated and sealed by an ion storm while in mid-conversion, resulting in the death and decomposition of a thousand people inside. Grash of course has a bigger part to play, but even he is your typical ranting, trigger-happy angry mutineer (and I guess it says something about this genre that that can be a recognized stereotype, but I digress). In the other direction, future episodes of the revived series will make reference to this story; the Mondasian Cybermen will eventually merge with the Cybus variant, and a Cyber-Planner (though not the same one in any case) will appear in Nightmare in Silver, as well as several audios: The Girl Who Never Was; Legend of the Cybermen; Last of the Cybermen; and the Cyberman range of audios.

The rest are confused and demanding to be told their purpose; but they are already aware that they must protect the Committee.Interestingly, Torchwood will later reveal a partially-converted Cyberman, of the Cybus variant, which is at odds with the conversion process we see in The Age of Steel. It is after the Cyber-wars, far enough that those events are viewed as history, and humans consider the Cybermen extinct. Jansen’s group regroups with Ike, and put on spacesuits; Jansen blows a hole in the hull and they escape out through it.
