About this deal

Another brilliantly funny pastiche of 80s horror novels that also happens to be a set of three great horror stories in their own right. Yes, it can be mind-boggling how Marenghi can embed a story written by one of his characters within the main narrative.

The gags are almost gone entirely in favour of a really pretty deep character dissection of Marenghi as a person. I hope Matthew Holness creates a series from these Garth Marenghi books because I would love to have a lot on my shelf! I'd highly recommend reading this in audiobook format because the acting really, really adds to the story and brings the whole thing to life hilariously. But this second book feels much more like a man with a story to tell than a comedian trying to make me laugh. The problem is that it's also clear from those sketches why an actual Marenghi book would be unreadable as a result.I think if you treated this as a collection of short stories and had about a two week gap between segments, it would be a good time. I can see why Holness might find it a bit Vulgar to just "play the hits" and recite the catchphrases. Believing the ever-extending power outage was a curse that could only be lifted by finishing the book, I powered through Aarabella Mathers and The Randyman.Would it have been such a terrible idea to take any one of the mentions of the word "Blood" in this story and swap them out for; "Blood? This excellent book is also available as an audiobook and although not a legitimate art form it would still be useful to those of you who are hand occupied and earbud compliant. About the Author: Garth Marenghi was born in the past, graduated from his local comprehensive (now bulldozed) with some O levels in subjects.

I would say, “spoilers ahead,” but no mere summation can truly encapsulate the dark majesty of Garth Marenghi’s prose. He wrote, directed and starred in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace for the Peruvian market, which subsequently aired on Channel 4 and has not been repeated due to its radical and polemic content. Admittedly I had understood very little but from what I had understood (again, very little) this book was about to shatter my mind, possibly temporarily but also possibly permanently. I mean I'm giving this five stars because it's the best, bad horror writing you will ever enjoy (well, I say enjoy), not that it really matters because as Garth himself says at the end of the audiobook he doesn't care how people rate or review his books. But that's actually part of the problem if you fell in love with the original character; I don't read a Garth Marenghi novel for competence and self awareness. And it's that balance between telling a story and honouring the gag that is missing in this second book. Garth Marenghi's Incarcerat takes another deep dive into the disturbing realities of our world…only in an absurdly warped sense of humour. Doomed to survive crash after crash of the airliners his protagonist, which is now himself, pilots, Nick grapples with his emerging paranormal abilities. Garth Marenghi, the renowned horror author famous for his spine-chilling works, is on a book tour for his latest novel, Incarcerat, which continues the adventures of horror author Nick Steen as he battles his own imagination and navigates a terrifying world.

That is not only a very funny silly piece of lowbrow humour but also reveals a lot about who the character is and his internal rules. As a huge fan of the original series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and it's accompanying sister series Man To Man With Dean Learner I'm a huge fan of the character and his ludicrous tropes and writing choices, which are in fact a key part of the original joke. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you.It perhaps gets a little overstuffed with ideas in a couple of places, but its worth it for the middle novella, which is an astonishingly good (and very funny) gothic / folk horror pisstake. He seems to have been written out of the story and replaced by Clackett Publishing which is a terrible shame as Reed's philandering gangster ways were a hilarious backdrop to Merenghi's total lack of self awareness. The story is competently told and nicely plotted with great insight into the multiple layers of Marenghi's character and family life. But they get pretty stale if you read the whole novel at once (this is a common problem with comic novels).
