Considering the often sombre and spectral mood of Time Out of Mind, it’s fascinating to hear how in some cases the different takes are much more upbeat and lighter than the final recordings. With such a vast amount of material available for Dylan's career, it is easy sometimes to go for years without hearing a particular album or era.

CD 2 and 3 – both made up of outtakes and alternate versions – are where things start to get really interesting. I felt that his voice, which was at one of it's least easy on the ears stages in the mid-1990s, was being propped up, or glossed over, by the production. The digital version saved me a lot of money, but I do miss the physical CD’s and more importantly the booklets, a digital booklet would have been handy.

There are too many times I've bought stuff that has "alternate versions" of songs, and invariably they're just alternate takes of the same song, no real noticeable differences. All the instruments are clear and sharp, even Bob’s vocals seem more invigorated, there’s more clarity all around.

The making of this album was protracted, painful, and in all ways alive, and the album’s dour countenance was largely the product of theater and shadow. This edition includes a new 2022 remix, by Michael Brauer, of the eleven original recordings on Time Out Of Mind, sounding more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room.
