About this deal

Prior to this, I must admit it does sometimes get a little repetitive with numerous accounts of other raids over occupied Europe and a fair amount of technical detail, though this is understandable, given the rapid development of aeronautic and ballistic technology at this time.

The RAF attack on the Ruhr Dams in Germany in May 1943 has come down through history as one of the most famous exploits of the Second World War. VHF radio sets were installed to allow better command and control while over the target (they were standard in fighters but this was the first time a bomber’s cockpit was fitted with them). Perhaps something in him even welcomed the inevitability he had always felt that before the war ended he would join them in their Bomber Command Valhalla.Gibson freely admits that he wrote this without notes or reference to a diary, so you can forgive any passages which might seem "tidied up" and it is a very easy but informative read. Pen and Sword's revised, updated and beautiful new edition of Gibson's own story in his own words is guaranteed to move its readers just as I was moved and inspired back in the late 1950s. The game board is organized into three sections, the Mission Planning Blotter, the Flight Map (from Scampton to the Ruhr), and the Target Maps. It is also an insider's account that sets down in clear, honest detail the challenges that the RAF faced in the war against Germany s Luftwaffe. Note on 2nd Printing: This edition will be identical to the 1st Printing except that any known errata will be corrected.

It was first published in book form in 1946, to much critical acclaim and a fully uncensored account released in 2003.Guy Gibson is, of course, more than just a pilot, he was the celebrated leader of the 617 squadron, the Dam Busters. All or a portion of this article consists of text from Wikipedia, and is therefore Creative Commons Licensed under GFDL. I have read several accounts of the air war over Europe, both from the perspective of the Royal Air Force and the U.

I really appreciate the time that narrators put into doing their work for us and this one seemed engaged and professional. There are also occasional snippets of humour as the author tells of the lighter side of life on a wartime RAF Station. In the next few chapters Gibson recounts his time on the Hampden medium-bomber with nerve jangling, fatigue ridden, accounts of flying deep into enemy territory. There are quite a few typos in the text: the one regarding the 425 (sic) degree intercept heading on page 130 being so glaringly obvious I'm amazed it has never been corrected.

It’s not the most professionally written biography but you know as you read it that Gibson wrote every word himself and he glosses over nothing. Whereas most works focus from a top-down, or strategic view, Gibson offers a view of the same issues from the tactical level, or bottom-up. Guy Gibson was not a professional airman ; he joined the service in peace time " because he wanted to learn to fly ". Nonetheless it's a fascinating account of the bomber war from the early days when targets were difficult to hit accurately, if at all, to the introduction of new systems and larger aircraft that turned Bomber Command into a formidable force. Due to the secrecy surrounding the weapon, Gibson uses a lot of pseudonyms to thinly disguise names and code words.
