The book is, essentially, a lightly edited transcript of many hours of rambling interviews, and reads like it. And I'm not trying to say that his notoriety isn't warranted - he'd be the first to tell you that the reality is even wilder than most people even realise - but it's just really easy to get swept up in what the media pretend to "report" on, completely forgetting that celebrities are people too; many of them with as many hopes/fears/petty concerns/regrets/embarrassing moments that make them cringe, as the rest of us.

But hearing Pete speak now with a calm persona, a rational outlook, and no longer that wandering maelstrom of chaos, it sounds like he's finally figured out who he is and what he wants to be.But just as he approaches a moment of insight, or self-reflection, he veers away again, choosing instead to focus on an irrelevant detail. A classic example is when he mentions the birth of his daughter in passing, the way someone would mention eating a Mars bar: 'Oh yeah, my daughter was born around then. If this isn’t quite a comeback story, it does end on a hopeful note, with Doherty – a musician again rather than a caricature – optimistic about what’s to come, intent on repairing various relationships once pushed to breaking point. As a somewhat lonely “army brat” – born in Northumberland but raised in Belfast, Cyprus, Germany, Dorset and Warwickshire – Doherty read Percy Shelley, Oscar Wilde and George Orwell. Peter's music is as eclectic as it is introspective, and is consistently thought of one of the leading lights on the British rock scene.
