Since the publication of Cicely Mary Barker’s first book in 1923, the Flower Fairies have been ethereal companions to generations of readers around the world.

My daughter has the earlier version and I purchased the newer version for my niece, as they both adore it. Featuring extraordinary illustrations by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and an exclusive introduction by Janina Ramirez, each of the 750 numbered copies has been signed by both contributors. My daughter and niece not only love the poems and illustrations – but they enjoy copying the drawings. With fresh new title pages and endpapers, reset text and printed on a fine quality paper, these new editions make a charming gift for all Flower Fairy enthusiasts. This collector's favorite has been redesigned and now features a lavish, eye-catching jacket with silver foil. Her paintings of the fairies with the flowers are beautiful and encouraged me to take up painting and hope to become an artist one day (I did but her fairies stand alone). It taught me to recognise many flowers, a lot I remember to this day and her poems accompanying them are charming. Although Barker painted and published many works, both secular and devotional, it was the Flower Fairies that became internationally beloved and remain so.

I first saw this lady's work as a child and learnt the names of many flowers, trees and shrubs from them. The first great English detective novel, Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone is presented in a Folio Society limited edition of 750 numbered copies. The interior still includes all of the well-loved illustrations and poems from Barker's eight original books, as well as a selection of fairy rhymes. She found wider acclaim as an artist with her delightful Flower Fairies books, the first of which, Flower Fairies of the Spring, was printed in 1923.El repartidor dejó el envío en el ascensor, evidentemente para no responder ante qué le había ocurrido al paquete para que estuviese así. From Victorian Britain to the tech-savvy 20th century, the gentle enchantment and intimacy of the Flower Fairies ensure their enduring fascination and connection with the natural world. I bought this beautiful book as a gift for a friend's great-granddaughter who is 4 years old and still hoping to find her first fairy. If I'm being honest, some of the poems are better than others, but I love the whole concept so much and the art is always five stars in my book. Her plants and flowers were observed with complete botanical accuracy and in the fairies themselves she captured perfectly the unselfconscious grace of children, whom she used to sketch in her sister's school.

There is a useful index, an introduction about Cicely Mary Barker – which is fairly short but long enough that most children will probably read it - and (of course) the poems and the pictures are just gorgeous. Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies™ books, published in the first half of last century, are known and loved around the world. The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. The fairies are beautiful Victorian children, scaled to size, with a set of wings and clothes made from parts of the plant. The art is stunning and the poems are sweet and informative without feeling like you are just sitting learning a lesson about plants. To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details. Seamus Heaney’s deeply felt interpretation, widely acknowledged as the greatest Beowulf translation of modern times, is presented in parallel with the Old English verse in this fabulous Folio edition. Both are hardback, with good quality paper and includes the original books: Flower Fairies of the Spring, Flower Fairies of the Summer, Flower Fairies of the Autumn, Flower Fairies of the Winter, Flower Fairies of the Garden, Flower Fairies of the Trees, Flower Fairies of the Wayside and A Flower Fairy Alphabet.

The illustrations of Cicely Mary Barker are as delicate and ethereal as you remember from your childhood. She was only sixteen when she had her first work accepted for publication as a set of postcards, and from that time she devoted her career to painting. I was ecstatic when I found this book, which is a compilation of many smaller books that Cicely Barker created. Like the Pre-Raphaelite painters whom she so much admired, she believed in recreating the beauty of nature in art and in drawing from life. This book was acquired as a gift for my father and the little figurines we have cherished for over a decade. No part of this excerpt may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the publisher. They were created by a quiet, unassuming and dedicated artist, who was nevertheless remarkably successful, spending her life illustrating many children’s books and selling hundreds of watercolours and pastels. Her charming poetry and delicate illustrations have sparked the imaginations of children for over ninety years and continue to inspire a life-long love for fairies and all things magical.
