But what actually is it, and is it the same as One Shot?

Cascamite” is a brand name used for a powder urea formaldehyde resin adhesive, and it became synonomous with any adhesive which met this specification, i.e. a one component powder urea formaldehyde resin. In recent times, they have become more commonly known as a “One Shot” adhesive. These adhesives are commonly used in wood working application for veneering, laminating and joint bonding. Although my main topic was how to mix UF glue. The fact is that this glue is so easy to mix as long as you follow the numbered steps above or watch my videos which show you first hand how you can mix the glue without lumps or separation. Yes, the glue takes a little effort to mix but it is worth it because I find the strength and its ability to resist moisture once set hard. After some practice, you will be able to mix this glue without a thought.

Cascamite is the best-known brand of powdered resin wood glue but what is it? Cascamite is sometimes referred to as UF but it’s technical chemical name is Urea Formaldehyde . This powdered resin is activated when mixed with water yet once set it is waterproof making an ideal glue for exterior use. Powdered resin wood glue is also known as Urea-Methanol, either way, Cascamite is a known carcinogen so dust masks while mixing are essential. Remember Oak dust is also a Carcinogen so care needs to be taken when working with any form of dust. What else is UF glue used for? Do not apply in damp conditions, when rain is likely, or in temperatures below 10°C - between 15°C and 20°C is ideal.

What is ‘Cascamite Powdered Resin Wood Glue’?

An excellent well proved adhesive for joinery, cabinetwork or boat building. This adhesive is specially formulated for external woodwork and Ideal for any projects where there is extended exposure to the elements. Cascamite is a synthetic resin, when, dry it is waterproof Formaldehyde off-gases, i.e. once it is manufactured and put into a material there is a period of time when it will put out more formaldehyde into the atmosphere than it will afterwards. When added formaldehyde is used in building products it ups the concentration and problems are more likely to occur. Simple choices when specifying materials can mitigate the formaldehyde risk, and minimise the extra chemicals you’re buying and furthering the use of, perhaps unwittingly. For example, we use a lot of oriented strand board in straw bale structural beams. We always use Smartply OSB3 because it contains no added formaldehyde, whereas I believe Sterling board and other makes do use extra formaldehyde in the manufacturing process (I am happy to be told otherwise!). This article from the US points out how important the need for research into finding an effective and more sustainable alternative to formaldehyde based glues in board manufacturing is becoming. Poly Vinyl Acetate is what we call PVA wood glue or white glue and also used by carpenters, schools and crafts. This aliphatic rubbery synthetic polymer is probably the most used glue. Formula (C4H6O2)n. Why use Cascamite when PVA is so Easy? You can add up to 20% extra water but can only be added at the mixing stage. Adding water once the glue starts it’s chemical reaction will result in the glue curdling. What do I need to mix Cascamite? This alternative use is good for casting small objects. When using this as a casting medium be careful to use enough substrate such as sand. You can use fibres or wood dust too for a different effect. As the glue is made with water it will shrink a little as it dries. The more sand you used the less shrinkage that can be expected. It is also important that the particles are fully surrounded by the resin or it will have a bad finish and it will be weak. How to Use the Freshly Mixed Glue

NOTE: Mixing by weight is recommended for accurate and consistent glue mixes. Cascamite Mixing Temperature?

My only boatbuilding experience was 30 or more years ago when I built two small wooden boats, both in plywood using Cascamite, a resin glue that comes in a powder that you mix with water. I liked this stuff, it was easy and tough. Well, you now have your super-duper glue all mixed and ready to rumble. When I want to adhere two pieces of timber for a permanent adhesion I first make sure all surfaces are clean and dry. Even before I contemplate applying glue I must be sure that the mating surfaced are jointed so there are no gaps.
