Now it’s time to add in 2 wings – for the wings, I formed the shapes away from the Robin in my hands and then added them onto the Robin and felted them in place. There are so many great choices for Winter Bird Books and Books about nests but for our book connection, I wanted something that really connected with the Nature that our children see and learn a little more about our most frequent winter garden visitor. Coming Home by Michael Morpurgo focuses on a little Robin and his journey from Scandinavia to an English garden during the winter months.

See our Needle Felted Penguin and Hearts for more Needle Felting Projects for beginners. Materials Needed to create your Needle Felted Robin Place on the head in a Toupee kind of effect and then felt into place stabbing with the needle – remember to pull out the same direction that you went in. An egg-shapedcookie cutter is optional and helped me form my shape at first. How to Make your Beginner 3D Needle Felting Project – Winter Robin

PS You can also buy the kit with all the materials you need to make two robins from Lincolnshire Fenn Crafts here If you’re looking for Christmas felt craft idea for children and stitching beginners, we recommend this Felt Bauble Decoration Template. Hope you enjoy! X You will need Unlike the American Robin, the British Robin is a colourful little bird who is a mainstay in our garden, fields, and towns throughout the year – they stake their territory and can be quite vicious to other robins that venture into the area.

Then we glued round the edge of the robin leaving about an inch gap for the stuffing to go in (if you have younger children then you can skip the stuffing as they look beautiful without it). Once the glue had dried then we stitched the edge using brown embroidery thread making sure we didn’t stitch the gap that was left for stuffing. We wanted our Robin’s to hand from our tree, so we added a small red ribbon at the top, We stitched it before moving on to the next step. These adorable felt robin’s will become family keepsakes for years to come and don’t worry if your children are too young to sew, these can be made with fabric glue, so are great for kids of all ages. Twinkl Kids TV or Twinkl Parents have many educational videos on various aspects of the school curriculum.I hope you’ll try my little needle felted robin project out – let me know how you get on if you do! Once the egg starts to form remove from the cookie cutter and hold in your hand and on the pad moving the egg around go in at angles at either end. Rotating the egg shape. The first thing I did to make my needle felted robin was to create the main body and head shape that I could felt around. Rather than waste my wool roving for this, I simply created two little balls of wall in different sizes, from a ball of spun yarn. See pics above. Step 2

Start by taking your white wool roving and foam it into an egg shape to make the body of your Robin. I used the egg-shaped cookie cutter to help me make the form.Enjoy and don’t aim for perfection. There are no rights and wrongs to your finished creation and feel free to add as much or as little detail as you wish. Enthusiasm is the key to most things and with a little of that you won’t go far wrong. Read each section before starting so you have an idea of where it is headed. Your project will, generally, not resemble anything close to what you are trying to make until at least 3/4 of the way through when you will hit the “how on earth is this ever going to look like that” wall, which you must punch your way through with steely determination. It all comes together near the end and everyone, experienced or a complete beginner, feels exactly the same way.’ For children that are more competent with a needle and thread then you could just pin the felt together and skip the glue altogether. I’m really happy with the finished result, especially since this is my first attempt at needle felting. And I have to say that needle felting is a very therapeutic hobby, just stabbing fabric over and over again until it finally morphs into the shape that you want!
