Tesco Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (50p/420g) – 71% Which? said: "Which said: "The beans themselves were a good texture, but some thought the sauce too runny and most found the flavour too weak." Benefits from an Student & Teacher Store cannot be used together with any other offer or promotion that is not featured within the Student Store itself. Waitrose Essential Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (55p/400g) – 71% Which? said: "The texture of the sauce was just right according to most, but they were thought to be too weakly flavoured by nearly half our panel. Around a third also found the beans too firm and not sweet enough. They are just a bit more than a third of the price of the Heinz variety and from now on I’ll be switching to Lidl and saving a big chunk of change for those lazy days when there’s a toddler to feed and not enough hours in the day.

In my opinion, they delivered on each count - the beans were tangy, salty, and had a great texture. There was no sign of a watery sauce, just a tin of great tasting beans.

While we are clearly obsessed with this beloved comfort food, many would argue there's not much that can beat a generous serving of beans on toast. This classic dish feels like home, stirring childhood memories of inhaling the dish in record time and inevitably spilling bean juice down your jumper in the process. The HP beans had a distinctive tangy flavour which I quite enjoyed, thanks to the vinegar in the recipe. The flavour wasn't overwhelming and to me tasted much more like my idea of a classic baked bean, rather than the sweeter versions I had tried. The baked beans were assessed in February 2023 by a large panel of consumers who regularly buy and consume baked beans. Autumn Statement: Workers to pay less in national insurance – but rate cuts don't offset the freezing of personal tax thresholds

The brands were assessed by 82 people each, with the panellists rating the taste, texture, aroma, and appearance of each product. The overall score is based on: 50% taste, 20% texture, 20% aroma. 10% appearance. Prices and availability correct as of 27 February 2023. Updated 3 April 2023 to remove Aldi due to supply changes. Tagged as:A blind taste test has ranked a number of own-brand baked beans ahead of established names like Heinz and HP. The sauce tasted of tomato, which is always a good start. It was yet again a little watery for me, but not the thinnest sauce I'd seen during the course of the taste test.

The panel of tasters put Asda Baked Beans (50p/410g) in overall top place, with a score of 77%. Which? declared them "a cut above all the rest for flavour," saying: ”Three-quarters of our tasters thought they had the perfect tomatoey taste. They were also some of the best rated beans for colour and sweetness.” Recently, Heinz Beanz were pitted against own-brands in a separate trial, with the taste-tester crowning Sainsbury's beans as the best budget option. They are 'low sugar' according to NHS guidelines , but it comes down to how much you eat, and what you have them with. A full can of the most sugary beans on test (Lidl's) adds up to 19g – about four teaspoons of sugar.

Beans are vegan-friendly and a good source of protein and fibre, with negligible fat content. Protein and fibre levels are similar across the brands, though Lidl's tin states there's more than 7g of fibre per 100g in their beans, which is considerably higher than the others. NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank to close at least 172 branches in 2023/24 – here's the full list, plus alternatives A Kraft Heinz spokeswoman said: "Our loyal consumers are at the centre of everything we do, and we remain committed to providing them with tasty, nutritious and high-quality Heinz Baked Beans." HP is perhaps one of the lesser-known brands when it comes to baked beans, so I didn't have any expectations when it came to trying them. A bit of research afterwards revealed HP is owned by Heinz, but I wasn't able to tell this based on the flavour.

Despite losing points on the texture, the taste was pleasant and fairly middle-of-the road. Overall, a decent option if you're looking to save cash on named brands. Most baked bean brands have low-sugar/low-salt versions, so you may want to give them a try if you're watching your intake. We only included standard versions in our taste test to ensure products were comparable. As they are a fixture of most UK households, we decided to put several supermarkets' offerings to the test, and it was no easy task. I tried nine tins of baked beans over the course of several days, which had an impressive combined weight of more than 2.4kg. The only fault I could find was the price, as it was one of the most expensive options on the list. However, on balance, I think it's work paying a little extra for the delicious flavour.

It’s Lidl for me. The sauce has proper flavour and, without claiming to be a world-class baked beans expert, when you look at the list of ingredients you can actually taste the things listed which for a convenience food really surprised me. A high percentage of beans and a high tomato purée content too. There are plenty of flavours on the ingredients – who knew a baked beans recipe could include chilli, cinnamon, capsicum, clove, paprika and clove? However the initial harumph at having to get the tin opener is forgotten because all those flavours are genuinely noticeable. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed if my boss hadn’t tasked me with tasting six tins simultaneously but he did, and I have, and I can honestly tell you that you can taste some proper flavour in this tin. And the winner?
