And this is true even if you’re using one of the more, um, vivid picture presets. As ever with an OLED TV, every pixel in the OLED807’s screen can produce its own light, delivering massive local contrast benefits over even the best LCD TVs. The OLED panel in the OLED807, though, builds on this by being one of the latest so-called OLED EX displays, meaning that it has the potential to produce as much as 30% more brightness than many previous OLED TVs. It's a big deal in these days where HDR video is so widely available.This year, the company is going even further to bolster its gaming credentials with a new 'Game Bar' menu that allows gamers to tweak the picture whilst a game is in progress. Given the asking price, it’s no surprise to find a lot of plastic used in the 807’s construction, and in places it’s quite hard, ordinary-feeling plastic too. But everything is screwed together properly, nothing groans or creaks, and the way the stand has been chromed is flawless. For the money, it’s hard to know what else you can realistically expect. Features The overriding reason for this is that Philips seems now to have found a sweet spot between achieving its historically aggressive approach to TV pictures and the unwanted side effects that satisfying those aggressive tendencies used to cause. The 55OLED907 also, though, continues Philips recent conversion to catering, sensibly, for a wide variety of image tastes, including fans of mastering accuracy, making it a TV that anyone can love. This wouldn’t matter, of course, if you could just switch between picture presets and leave your involvement with the TV’s menus at that. As we’ve seen, though, consistently getting the best from the OLED807 means familiarising yourself with at least some parts of its picture adjustment menus.

The 55OLED807 is quite similar to competing TVs from alternative brands in many ways – so I may as well start with the feature that puts the Philips out on its own: Ambilight. There are actually two game modes: Optimal and Optimal (Auto). The latter mode allows you to enjoy the benefits of VRR. In terms of other gaming features, there’s support for HGiG and Dolby Vision HDR gaming, along with cloud gaming via Geforce Now. Ask them to follow the on-screen hues and they create a coloured glow around the edges of the screen on the wall behind it – it makes the image seem larger than it already is, and also reduces eye-strain. Memory size (Flash): 16 G, the actual available disc space may differ (dependant on e.g. (pre-)installed apps, installed operating system, etc.) If you're after something cheap 'n' cheerful for a kitchen counter, the 5537 could be one to consider. Inevitably the 55OLED907’s rear has to accommodate a more substantial section containing connections, processing, speakers and the Ambilight LEDs over the central portion of its bottom half, but you need to be looking at the TV from a pretty severe angle before this bulkier bit becomes visible past the ultra-skinny edges. There are fans of Ambilight who swear by the technology, but if you’re a video purist who doesn’t fancy disco lighting behind the TV, there is another benefit. Ambilight offers a neutral white setting that acts as a bias light and has a number of key advantages, such as improving the perceived contrast, and also creates a more comfortable viewing experience at night. What’s more, the 55OLED907 manages to deliver strikingly intense highlights even within bright pictures – an eye-catching achievement that does a great job of making full-screen bright images look much punchier than they typically do on OLED screens.

In profile, there’s a portion of that lovely OLED slimness we all covet, but below there the OLED807 is an unglamorous 68mm deep. At least Philips has compelling mitigation as to why that might be, though… OLED EX (anacronymof 'Evolution' and 'eXperience') uses deuterium gas and proprietary algorithm-based ‘EX Technology’ to boost brightness by predicting the usage amount of each individual diode based on your viewing habits. This apparently enables the screen to 'more accurately express the details and colours of the video content being played'. We could spend a good few thousand words next on the myriad picture adjustments provided within Philips convoluted menu system. It really does feel like Philips has given you control over, well, everything. For the sake of everyone’s sanity, though, we’ll limit ourselves to saying that while enthusiasts may embrace and enjoy exploring the huge range of adjustments the 55OLED807 carries, it can all be a bit intimidating to more regular folk. The 55OLED907 sounds almost miraculously good for a TV that accommodates its speaker set-up in such a compact design. The front-facing speakers behind the felt band below the screen are far more powerful than you’d think possible, pushing huge quantities of sonically charged air forwards into your room. This instantly delivers much more impact and directness than the majority of integrated TV sound systems.Percentage Luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output It's also worth noting that the new OLED807 is one of the first TVs to support DTS Play-FiHome Theatre. The tech allows you to integrate your TV into a Play-Fi wireless surround speaker system, and use your TV's built-in speakers as a dedicated centre channel. Pretty clever. Philips 2022 TV range breakdown So with Ambilight out of the way, the 55OLED807 becomes a slightly more straightforward, like-for-like rival to all the price-comparable alternatives around. Mind you, its compatibility with every worthwhile HDR standard, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+, marks it out as the product of a company who puts the consumer, rather than industry politics, first. This focuses on delivering the very best of what Philips identifies as the five key pillars of picture quality: Colour, sharpness, contrast, motion and source recognition/optimisation. However, it also adds new features including a colour optimisation engine, an Ambient Intelligence feature designed to better auto-optimise pictures in different ambient conditions - especially in terms of brightness and colour temperature - and a new AI Auto Film mode, connected to the processor's AI Content Classification system.
