About this deal

Silicone sealant removers are most useful here as they work at breaking down the sealant and allowing you to remove it with ease.

So after reading my original post and reply below, is there a "special" sealant removal chemical used by manufactureres which does not destroy the bond or not? I must admit, there are some brand new caravans out there that look decidedly secondhand because of the amount of excess sealant, and the grime it attracts. By far the most popular and highly rated caravan sealant is the Sikaflex 512. It’s an all-purpose adhesive and sealant that’s been designed especially for caravan, motorhome or trailer repairs. Using one is the most ideal way to fix leaks without carrying out extensive renovation work on your caravan. If you were just to run a search through Google, Bing or your preferred search engine for ‘caravan sealants’ though, thousands of results would be returned. This might not be helpful if you are completely new to caravan repairs. If you need just to seal a small leak, then almost any sealant will be fit for the job, but if you need to do a large repair, then you may need a more specialised heavier duty sealant. PriceAccording to the brand, it’s formulated to be thinner than water and is able to penetrate deep inside of the narrowest of surfaces. Once settled, it produces a clear waterproof seal that prevents leaks.

The Soundaseal RV 61 is a highly rated caravan sealant which the brand state is used by many major manufacturers in the UK. The chemically neutral hybrid polymer is designed for interior or exterior use and forms a strong yet elastic bond that resists the effect of vibration. Finding and fixing a leak before it leads to a long list of repair, refinishing and replacement tasks can save you alot of headaches. To avoid taking that route, it’s always best to do the below. Leaks on the inside can be a lot easier to find than you may think, once you know what to look for. There will usually be tell-tale signs either on the ceiling or the walls in the form of water stains. It may be that you trace the leak from the caravan’s exterior. However, with the increasing use of bonding sealants, removing fittings quite often ends up with a destroyed fitting as the bonding sealer is stronger than the fitting. Despite these problems it is still often the best solution to use a quality proven caulking compound where you know you will need to remove the items that are being sealed. This type of sealant displays excellent adhesion, chemical and weathering properties, as well as the added advantage over traditional silicone in that it is both sand-able and paintable. Interestingly, it is also anti fungal. Some caravans were also built where the caulking compound was too soft and tended to run out and drip during very hot weather. When it comes to repairing a caravan roof, one of the most important steps is applying a new coating. A new coating helps protect the roof from further damage and wear and tear. This article will discuss how to apply a new coating to a caravan roof in four steps. Once the old material is loosened, use a putty knife to lift the edges of the material and pull it away from the surface. Pull off as much of the material as you can. If there are any stubborn pieces, use a heat gun to help loosen them. You may also want to avoid buying a sealant that needs to be used with a primer or activator, which can incur additional costs and increase repair time. Primary Application

Finishing Touches: Before you call your caravan roof repair job complete, there are a few final touches you can do to make sure your repair is properly finished. Applying a protective coating and sealing the roof will help protect it from future damage. Additionally, it is important to inspect the entire structure for any potential problems. Finally, make sure to clean up any debris and dispose of any used materials properly. In Summary Swift vans use different sealers to Bailey, and different cleaners for for different parts of the caravan body, use the wrong one and you WILL see the panel dissolve before your eyes. If you need to detail any joins, corners, junctions screw holes etc. use of Geo-textile bandage is recommended. This will allow extra re-enforcement to those areas that need that little extra care.Polyurethane Sealants. Polyurethane sealants are the latest in caravan sealant technology. These are by far the most advanced and effective, providing superior durability and protection compared to the alternatives available. It’s likely that polyurethane sealants have become so popular in recent years because this type of fixing works perfectly with fibreglass. Fibreglass is the material that more newer caravans are built with. It could also be down to the fact that polyurethane sealants can be sanded, painted over and are UV-resistant. An alternative caravan sealant to the other formulas within this article is the W4 Mastic Sealing Strip. It comes in a 5 metre reel and is ideal for sealing awning rails, roof lights, vents, windows and many other components. Nobody wants to buy a product that isn’t easy to use, and caravan sealant is no different. You should avoid buying a sealant that takes too much difficulty and time to install correctly because this can be extremely frustrating, especially if you’re using it on an awkward surface such as the roof.
