Ralph Macchio has had a long and successful career but there’s no doubt that the character he’s most associated with is Daniel LaRusso from ‘The Karate Kid’ franchise. He played the character in three films – ‘The Karate Kid’ (1984), ‘The Karate Kid Part II’ (1986) and ‘The Karate Kid Part III’ (1989) – and he reprised the role for the hit series ‘Cobra Kai’, which started in 2018 and is still going strong. Nearly 40 years after the original film was released, Macchio is sharing his experiences and stories from the franchise in his new book ‘Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me’. I finally did, and obviously, it has become one of my favorite 80's films. Too, too good and some truly beautiful moments. He wasn’t kidding about looking young: the man has scarcely a wrinkle and whenever the digital feed turns slightly fuzzy, it occurs to me he could pass for someone half his age. He is sitting in front of a computer in his family home on Long Island in New York, using a room that used to be his study, he says, before he stripped it of movie posters and made it a guest room for his ageing in-laws. He chats with a pleasing, throaty, New York accent, tipping about excitedly in an office chair and making its hinges squeak when he gets into a conversational flow. He wears the T-shirt of a California vineyard, gifted to him by one of his best friends, Stan, who was Macchio’s body double on The Karate Kid all those years ago.

Macchio was introduced to his future wife, Phyllis Fierro, by his grandmother when he was 15. They married on April 5, 1987, and have two children. [28] Fierro is a nurse practitioner. [28] [29] [24]I’ve been infatuated with him since Eight is Enough. While he’s only 8 years older than I am (a big difference when you’re only 10) he looked my age and he was from Long Island just like me !! Like he lived less than a half hour from me !! I got choked up a time or two as it became evident, and impacting, the relationship --friendship-- that grew between Macchio and Pat Morita. The funeral service for Morita - where Zabka showed, as well. That did me in. I did wish he talked more about Part II, and sadly Part III - even though he did dislike that film. I wanted more information about the making of those two. But I think he feels more grounded and proud of his work in Part I. I loved everything about how Daniel beat Terry Silver at the end of Cobra Kai season 5. That was his greatest victory in the show so far.
