About this deal

He said that Tuesday evening would be "critical" in ensuring the fires are kept under control, adding: "It would be premature to say we are out the other end of this incident". Sagging conductors and overheating transformers caused faults with the power network in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the North East A firefighter at the scene, asked what conditions were like, replied: “absolute hell”, while those affected by the blaze said it had been spreading “fast”. It’s swelteringly hot here - temperatures reached 37C - and those warm winds we’ve been experiencing all day have hampered efforts to douse the flames in north Kent. A major blaze in the village of Wennington in east London ripped through fields and homes, with the full extent of the damage - and any casualties - yet to be determined

They were first alerted to the woodland fire at 12.07pm, while another four fire engines are also fighting a second fire in Shirley Hills slightly further south near Chapel View, MyLondon reports. The London Fire Brigade was also fighting two separate fires in the Shirley Hills near Croydon on Tuesday afternoon with huge plumes of smoke rising up into the sky over the wooded area. One of the great things about art, as with many things in life, is the discovery of the new. Finding a picture or photograph that may have been thought lost to the ravages of time that stirs something inside, whether it a strange sense of dread or an uplifting rush of joy.SE: Well I wanted it to be a circular narrative, where it starts in darkness and kind of ends in light. It begins with the primal, the landscape and what shaped it. It looks at the natural landscape and the eerie aspects of that like ghosts and mythical creatures. And the way the landscape may have been formed by supernatural forces. According to the Met Office, most of England is at "exceptional" risk of wildfires, aside from the South West and patches of the North. Home Secretary Priti Patel said on Tuesday night: "I have just been updated on the national fire situation. With dangerous fires burning across the country, I continue to urge the public to follow all safety advice from their local fire service, and stay safe. Osman asks us to consider the conventional English self-image: proper, well-managed, controlled, and rational. This is an image of imperial riches and hard-won technologies; it’s an image of refinement and self-regulation. But England On Fire is a visual journey through a suppressed history, from forest revelry to surreal enchantment to urban alterity. “Which Coventry Kahlo, which Plymouth Picasso should be hanging in the National Gallery?” Osman asks, following Thomas Gray’s silent rebellion centuries ago in a country churchyard.

Riminta Maceikaite, 38, and her son Nikas Janulevicius, 13, said their neighbours' homes have burned down but as far as they can see from TV aerial shots, their house is still standing. Here at Spirits Rest animal sanctuary they put the call out for help earlier on - and how the community has responded. People rallied round, offering to rescue the animals in danger. Basically all the rules of witchcraft were invented in there about a hundred years ago. It’s a bit like The Royal Family. Everyone thinks these are ancient rituals, but The Royal Family reinvented themselves after the First World War. And with modern witchcraft that came out of a basement at around the same time. TM: We’re currently living through interesting times – do you see this being reflected in contemporary English art?Certainly with the things that have been going on in the last few years, like Brexit, the divisive nature of that and the sense that people are alienated from what’s going on, I thought it was really important to emphasise ,not just the continuity of the radical strands in it, but also that this is a weird place. There’s also another whole load of books, TV programmes and documentaries about old, weird Albion stuff. I didn’t think anyone needed to see another still from The Witchfinder General or Blood on Satan’s Claw, that has been done. I wanted it to be quite angry and polemical, but also to have a sense of possibility and hope at the end of it. TM: What do you hope people take from the book? I guess one reason must be bringing some of these images to the fore and also keeping them alive … His new book, England On Fire, is a genuine feast for the eyes and the imagination. Here Stephen has selected hundreds of incredible images that take the reader on a journey through England’s psychic landscape, featuring a diverse collection of artists from William Blake and Samuel Palmer, to many previously lesser known contemporary painters, sculptors and photographers. Alongside these images sits perfect poetic prose from author and bassist of indie band Suede, Mat Osman, whose words help us explore this unique look at Albion from the supernatural to standing stones and water to wilderness. The sooner we know about a fire, the sooner we can bring it under control and prevent it from spreading further, reducing the need for us to mobilise additional resources. Once we've done that we'll be able to give an accurate picture of exactly the incidents we've attended, how many homes have been affected and if there have been any casualties."Paris has hit 40C today for only the third time on record. Germany is having its hottest day of the year so far, and the Netherlands has recorded its hottest 19 July ever, with 38.9C in Maastricht. One of the big supermarkets has halted home deliveries. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has seen a "significant increase" in grass fires over the last month, with numbers rising even further this week. The technical rescue unit is also in attendance and crews are using a telehandler machine to create a fire break, to stop the fire from spreading further. No injuries have been reported." The London Ambulance Service said the total number of people taken to hospital may not be known until Wednesday morning. Today the UK officially reached 40C – something the Met Office said was "virtually impossible" in an undisrupted climate.

When it shows you from the sky it just freaks you out," says Riminta. "Our house is on the news", says Nikas, "it's the only house that hasn't been burned so far." The English are obsessed with the world behind the real world. I’m quite fascinated by why in Victorian era there was this huge Vogue for fairy paintings. Victorian fairy painting is really weird. Some of the people involved like Arthur Conan Doyle’s father, Charles Altamont Doyle, who I didn’t include because he’s Scottish, was the most extraordinary character. He ended up in an asylum. The Cottingley Fairy photographs, which Conan Doyle was convinced by, were amazing in how they essentially conned a nation. People wanted to believe in them. I think it was partly due to the trauma after WW1, they wanted something to believe in.

Others have been evacuated from their homes as blazes rage in Dagenham, east London on Tuesday afternoon. Tonight, a band of heavy, showery rain will progress eastwards across Britain, falling as thundery showers in places.
