The rest of the world very much has a problem with the fire hazard created from small appliance leads and inadequate overload protection. Before we had the BS1363 "one size fits all" plug system, with it's integral appliance lead fuse protection, we had four different sizes of domestic power outlet, specifically to get around this problem. We also had radial wiring, with each power circuit type (2 A, 5 A, 10 A and 15 A) protected by fuses with a different rating. The danger was that, as all these round 3 pin plugs were re-wireable, someone could (and often did) fit a 15 A plug to a 2 A rated appliance, so removing the overload protection. The solution was to fit a fuse in the new BS1363 plug, which could then be rated to adequately protect the appliance lead from overload. All in this was very sensible at the time, and the heat from the fuse wasn't at all a problem, as plugs at that time were all made from thermoset plastic, with a fair bit of ventilation space around the fuse. The introduction of the BS1363 plug, together with the BS1362 fuse and shuttered L and N pins in the outlets made the UK domestic electrical system probably the safest in the world. A 22kW home charger will be even faster, but this requires a three-phase electricity supply, making it unsuitable for the vast majority of EV owners.
