Description

In sequential Crystal DiskMark speeds, the SSD 870 EVO hits Samsung's own rated spec without a sweat, while 4K results were just a bit stronger, but still a bit slower than expected when comparing the 4TB and 1TB variants of the same drive.

Samsung Performance While the above differences in TBW are huge, they may not mean all that much for regular users. It’s worth noting that the exact numbers vary from drive to drive, and just because an SSD is given a warrantied TBW of 1,440 doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t break down well before reaching that threshold. All it means is that it’s still under warranty and may be replaced by the manufacturer. Similarly, some SSDs continue functioning well beyond their expected lifespan. We test all of our SATA and PCI Express 3.0 SSDs on PC Labs' main storage testbed, which is built on an Asus Prime X299 Deluxe motherboard with an Intel Core i9-10980XE Extreme Edition CPU. clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604427359-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604431429-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604431547-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604435637-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604427151-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net,Above, you can see that the 1TB Samsung SSD 870 EVO hits parity when compared with leading options like the 12-cent-per-gigabyte ADATA SX8200 Pro, a PCIe 3.0 M.2 drive.

The Samsung 870 EVO comes with either 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB of storage at most. The newer 870 QVO has a larger capacity right out of the gate, with the smallest drive offering 1TB, followed by 2TB, 4TB, and lastly, a whopping 8TB. This makes it one of the largest consumer-level SSDs available on the market. clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604439174-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604441206-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604441267-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604425484-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604425610-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 684dd305.akstat.io, 684dd306.akstat.io, 684dd307.akstat.io, 684dd308.akstat.io, 684dd309.akstat.io, 684dd30a.akstat.io, 684dd30c.akstat.io, 684dd30d.akstat.io, 6852bd07.akstat.io, 6852bd08.akstat.io, 6852bd09.akstat.io, 6852bd0a.akstat.io, 6852bd0b.akstat.io, 6852bd0c.akstat.io, 6852bd0d.akstat.io, 6852bd0e.akstat.io, 6852bd0f.akstat.io, 6852bd10.akstat.io, 6852bd11.akstat.io, 6852bd12.akstat.io, i22f44600-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22f47c00-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22f4a100-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22f55c00-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22f5ca00-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22f6b100-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22f7bf00-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22fdb800-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i22fdd700-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i3430c200-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i34d04400-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i34d71700-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i36486200-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net, i364b2700-ds-aksb-a.akamaihd.net,

As Samsung QVO uses QLC NAND, it’s the slowest of all flash memory types. On paper, this may not mean much. According to Samsung, both the 870 EVO and the 870 QVO offer 520MBps write speeds and 550MBps read speeds. However, this is with the use of Samsung’s Intelligent TurboWrite technology. In that quest, the Samsung SSD 870 EVO succeeds handily, setting new records for SATA while also keeping the drive just about competitive with M.2 drives when launching games or Adobe Photoshop. If you're married to SATA pricing (or your PC can't handle anything else) but want to optimize 4K performance, the Samsung SSD 870 EVO is the best new SATA drive of the early days of 2021. It should be at the top of anyone's list who wants the best combination of performance, product quality, and price in a 2.5-incher. As an upgrade to the 860 EVO, the 850 EVO, or even any other SATA SSD, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I've said it before and I'll say it again, upgrading SATA for SATA doesn't make a lot of sense. At least, not unless you have a drive failure and it needs replacing. The Pro SSDs remain the most expensive that Samsung has on offer. In comparison, both the EVO and the QVO are more reasonably priced. Of the three of them, the new QVO drives are by far the cheapest.
