About this deal

BB dreams of travelling, and yet has never even tried to fulfil his dreams. In what way would you say that this defines his character? Joanne is not only a master of her craft but has the rare gift of being able to explain that craft, and offer peerless advice, in the clearest, no-nonsense, practical and entertaining of ways. Wherever you are in your writing voyage, Joanne is the perfect navigator. Learn, absorb, and enjoy! (MATT HAIG) The narrator of the novel (like the author) has synaesthesia . Find out more about this condition here. Her American publishers were so disturbed by the change in style that they turned the book down. Harris is unrepentant. Joanne Harris, the acclaimed author of Chocolat, departs from sunny characters and a feel-good story in her latest work, blueeyedboy.

I was being threatened with arrest in America unless I went to court. To have that kind of thing hanging over you, I don’t think you tend to write too well.” She shrugs. “It happens.”The author misdirects the reader a number of times in this book. How does this contribute to the theme of perception and identity? Do your feelings about BB change when you realize how much he has lied to you? Yes, I was afraid you might. As in life, the final chapter doesn’t resolve quite as cleanly as either of us might have liked. But to really appreciate a book, the reader should bring as much to the table as he means to take away. That means deciding for yourself how you think the story ends (and you may find that your opinion on this varies according to your state of mind). What I’m saying, I guess, is this: please don’t ask me what comes next. I’m usually the last to know… Reader Comments on Blueeyedboy There is some evidence to suggest that the fictional Malbry is based on Harris' home village of Almondbury, near Huddersfield, in Yorkshire. In the Rune books, Red Horse Hill is sometimes referred to as " Castle Hill", a noted Huddersfield landmark. Other real-life places referred to in Runemarks and Runelight are: Farnley Tyas (which is also the name of a village near Almondbury) and the nearby Molly Carr Woods. blueeyedboyis a dark and intricately plotted tale of a poisonously dysfunctional family, a blind child prodigy, and a serial murderer who is not who he seems.

In 2000, her 1999 novel CHOCOLAT was adapted to the screen, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. She is an honorary Fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and in 2022 was awarded an OBE by the Queen.Like an actor, I don’t feel myself possessed by characters. I can take off the clothes at the end of the day, and say, ‘right, that’s you done’.” The tightly plotted drama of “Different Class” plays out in a way which is exciting and surprising, but the novel also says something meaningful about our shifting sense of values. I read this novel at a much faster pace than I read most books for the sheer pleasure of the idiosyncratic characters and the desire to know how their intriguing story would play out. It’s a highly enjoyable read. (The Lonesome Reader) Another theme is that of colour. All the principle characters have a colour assigned to them. The narrator sees colours behind words. Again, a clever idea but to my mind the constant references to different shades of blue became annoying.

The main narrator, BB, has a very unique perception of the world. In what way does it change his outlook on things? In what way does it direct his behaviour? This is a truly frightening tale, and I was left reeling from all the turns and red herrings. I can't explain much more, just that I've never read anything like it, but it scared me a bit too much to give it more than 3.5 stars. http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff-nation/i-ve-just-finished-reading/7721723/I-ve-just-finished-reading-Blue-Eyed-BoyThis is a very clever book; arguably the cleverest of all Harris’s books and almost certainly too clever for the likes of me. Because I struggled with it, if I’m honest.
