The nation’s 27,000 cubic metres of nuclear waste – accumulated after producing electricity in nuclear reactors over 62 years – could find its final resting place in 15 out of the 16 German states. The only large connected areas that have now been excluded from the process are located in the very west and the very south of the country. It is said that children as young as 10 were put to work pushing mining cards and performing other forced menial labor. Believe it or not, there are tours!

Unfortunately, Essen does not have its own commercial airport. Instead, there is just one air facility for private use, independent pilots and charter flights. However, most visitors use the Düsseldorf International Airport, which is incidentally, the third busiest air terminal in Germany. Essen’s light rail system travels along a central subway route that extends from Essen Hauptbahnhof to Berliner Platz. It crosses the city center where the trains, on Stadtbahn’s 3 commercial lines travel as well. The remaining structure is surface level. The Fortress of Mimoyecques is the modern name for a Second World War underground military complex built by the forces of Nazi Germany between 1943 and 1944. It was intended to house a battery of V-3 cannons aimed at London, 165 kilometres (103 mi) away. Originally codenamed Wiese (“Meadow”) or Bauvorhaben 711 (“Construction Project 711”), it is located in the commune of Landrethun-le-Nord in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, near the hamlet of Mimoyecques about 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Boulogne-sur-Mer. It was constructed by a mostly German workforce recruited from major engineering and mining concerns, augmented by prisoner-of-war slave labour. Hitler first arrived at the headquarters on 23 June 1941. In total, he spent more than 800 days at the Wolfsschanze during a 3½-year period until his final departure on 20 November 1944. In the summer of 1944, work began to enlarge and reinforce many of the Wolf’s Lair original buildings. However, the work was never completed because of the rapid advance of the Red Army during the Baltic Offensive in autumn 1944. The National Socialist Underground (German: Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund, pronunciation ⓘ), or NSU ( German: [ɛnʔɛsˈʔuː] ⓘ), was a far-right German neo-Nazi terrorist group which was uncovered in November 2011. [1] The NSU is mostly associated with Uwe Mundlos, Uwe Böhnhardt and Beate Zschäpe, who lived together under false identities. Between 100 and 150 further associates were identified who supported the core trio in their decade-long underground life and provided them with money, false identities and weapons. Unlike other terror groups, the NSU had not claimed responsibility for their actions. The group's existence was discovered only after the deaths of Böhnhardt and Mundlos, and the subsequent arrest of Zschäpe. Natural gas reserves in Germany, which has one of the highest underground gas storage capacities in Europe, have fallen to historically low levels compared with previous years.

Berlin, so full of history above ground, has a lot to tell in its subterranean areas as well. There are exhibits about everything from air raid bunkers to the removal of rubble from the destruction during World War II. Berliner Unterwelten found a huge file system about slave workers during the war in a forgotten bunker, helped the former workers to receive reparation pay and have an exhibition about slave workers in Berlin. Found objects such as ammunition, grenades, gas masks, etc. are on display as well. There is an exhibition about Hitler’s “Germania,” his utopian vision to rebuild Berlin. It’s just 30 minutes from Essen’s city center. To reach it by metro, one can ride to Essen Hauptbahnhof station, accessible from three commercial lines. From there, one boards the RE 10162 express which travels directly to the airport. It typically takes no longer than 35 – 40 minutes and stops right outside the airport.
