Battleground Western Europe: Intelligence Operations in Germany and the Netherlands, edited by Beatrice de Graaf, Ben de Jong, Wies Platje, 2007. Macintyre wrote that recently released wartime archives in Britain revealed an extraordinary conversation between Chapman and Ronnie Reed, his case officer. In the 1950s producer Ted Banborough announced plans to make a film about Chapman starring Michael Rennie or Stanley Baker, but this did not go ahead. [27] Nicholas Booth, Zigzag – The Incredible Wartime Exploits of Double Agent Eddie Chapman, 2007, Portrait, London ( ISBN 0749951567), pp. 280–81. The brainchild of an eccentric RAF officer and a brilliant Jewish barrister, this great deception involved an extraordinary cast of characters including Ian Fleming, who would go on to write the James Bond stories; a famous forensic pathologist; a beautiful secret service secretary; a submarine captain; three novelists; an irascible admiral who loved fly-fishing; and a dead, Welsh tramp. Using fraud, imagination and seduction, Winston Churchill's team of spies spun a web of deceit so elaborate and so convincing that they began to believe it themselves. From a windowless basement beneath Whitehall, the hoax travelled from London to Scotland to Spain to Germany and ended up on Hitler's desk.

Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness had to face down opposition as they sought to bring the IRA into peace talks. Hardline members wanted to continue their campaign and refused to negotiate with the British state. From the outset GARBO showed a preference for this agent and, being the oldest survivor of the network, after disposing of Agents Nos. 1 and 2 it was natural that he should have finally gained the rank of Deputy Chief of the GARBO network. There can hardly be a more graphic illustration of Donaldson’s closeness to the heart of republicanism. One April morning in 1943, a sardine fisherman spotted the corpse of a British soldier floating in the sea off the coast of Spain, setting in train a course of events that would change the course of World War Two. This is the most comprehensive and honest Hitler Biography, offering a whole new and unique look at all the old chestnuts surrounding Adolf Hitler's rise to power. The author uses the personal assistance of a Spymaster in marshalling much new material surrounding Hitler's origins, his sexuality, and his British Training, long hidden by a conspiracy of British and American political leaders. He takes an in depth look at the British Royal Family and finds them wanting, full of spies, perverts, and morons, with the morons being the least dangerous.

The 1966 film Triple Cross was based on the biography The Real Eddie Chapman Story [29] co-written by Chapman and Frank Owen. The film was directed by Terence Young, who had known Chapman before the war. Chapman's character was played by Christopher Plummer. [30] The film was only loosely based on reality, and Chapman was disappointed with it. In his autobiography, Plummer said that Chapman was to have been a technical adviser on the film, but the French authorities would not allow him in the country because he was still wanted over an alleged plot to kidnap the Sultan of Morocco. [31] He moved instead to Lisbon, and–using a tourist's guide to Britain, reference books, and magazines from the Lisbon Public Library, and newsreel reports he saw in cinemas–created seemingly credible reports that appeared to come from London. [4] During his time in Portugal, he stayed in Estoril, at the Hotel Palácio. [30] He claimed to be travelling around Britain and submitted his travel expenses based on fares listed in a British railway guide. Pujol's unfamiliarity with the non-decimal system of currency used in Britain at the time was a slight difficulty. [31] At this time Great Britain's unit of currency, the pound sterling, was subdivided into 20 shillings, each having twelve pence. Pujol was unable to total his expenses in this complex system, so simply itemised them, and said that he would send the total later. [32] After the war, Chapman smuggled gold and ran a health spa, among other activities. He died in 1997. 2. William Sebold: The FBI counterspy who brought down a German espionage ring Chalandon’s fictional IRA man never fully confirms why he betrayed the republican movement, nor is his death ever totally explained. Best met with Fischer at an unspecified location in the Netherlands at the beginning of September 1939.

The circumstances that led to Denis Donaldson becoming a British agent are uncertain, like much else about his time as a spy.

The IRA denied responsibility for his murder, and leaders of Sinn Fein denounced the killing publicly. In 2009 the splinter group the Real IRA claimed they had killed Donaldson. This claim has been doubted by numerous groups, and allegations have been made that other parties were involved. a b "Edward Arnold Chapman – Agent 0747587949/ZIGZAG" (PDF). Bloomsbury Publishing. Wallis Simpson — the American divorcée Edward abdicated the throne to marry — was always painted as the villain of the story, but Edward VIII: Britain’s Traitor King shows how this conveniently drew attention and scrutiny away from Edward.(CBC/Edward VIII: Britain’s Traitor King) A thank you letter to HitlerIn 1941 when the Germans were all-powerful in Spain, the British Embassy in Madrid was being stoned, France had collapsed and the German invasion was imminent, little were the Germans to know that the small meek young Spaniard who then approached them volunteering to go to London to engage in espionage on their behalf would turn out to be a British agent. Still less were they to discover that the network which they instructed him to build up in the UK was to be composed of 27 characters who were nothing more than a figment of the imagination." A Chicagoan born in 1944, Hanssen earned degrees from Knox College and Northwestern University before joining the FBI in 1976. Three years later, he volunteered to spy for GRU, the Soviet military intelligence agency. In 1980, after Hanssen’s wife reportedly caught him with some suspicious-looking papers, he admitted to selling secrets to the Soviets but claimed the information he’d handed over was worthless. At his wife’s insistence, Hanssen promised to cut ties with the Soviets and confessed to a priest, who told him to donate the ill-gotten money to charity. In 1985, though, he resumed spying for the Soviets, this time for the KGB, while continuing to rise through the FBI’s ranks. In 1991, with the Soviet Union dissolving, Hanssen stopped spying out of fear he’d be found out. However, in 1999, while serving as the FBI liaison to the U.S. State Department, he started spying for the SVR, the Russian intelligence service. After the FBI learned, thanks to help from an ex-KGB officer, that Hanssen was a mole, he was arrested in February 2001. Later that year, in an effort to avoid the death penalty, the veteran FBI agent pleaded guilty to 15 counts of espionage. He delves into the James Bond myths and finds the true James Bond was a lot younger and more homicidal than anyone had previously thought. He interview James Bond III on one of the last 'hits' on Adolf Hitler, well after his official death. Hitler used the incident to claim that the Netherlands had violated its own neutrality. The presence of Klop, a Dutch agent, whose signature on his personal papers was gratefully misused by the Germans, provided sufficient "proof of cooperation between British and Dutch secret services, and justify an invasion of The Netherlands by Germany in May, 1940".
