As in most mixing environments, having a balanced room to place the speakers in is a key component to crafting an accurate mix, but the JBL 3-series speakers themselves were easily up to the task of making excellent mixes with plenty of depth. Simply put, there’s no reason someone with sufficient skill couldn’t mix a fantastic sounding album, podcast, or other project on these speakers. Unlike comparable options we’ve heard in this price category, the 306 MkII are very transparent and honest — just what you need to do proper work that will sound good anywhere. Warranty information We see more of distortion between 1 and 2 kHz in the larger 308P than in 306P. The larger woofer seems unhappier in the higher range than the smaller one in 306P. But with the good does come the bad. There is a noticeable hiss that is louder than I would have liked, and it’s audible up to 2 feet (60cm), which could be a little annoying for longer sessions.

I'll be the first to admit the woofer and tweeter are nothing special. Cheap, even. But as Amir alluded to, thanks to their excellent controlled dispersion they have a wonderful ability to sound "right" in the less-than-ideal listening rooms many (most?) of us are working with. In practical usage, this trumps a number of other flaws one might see on the graphs. I have heard objectively better speakers, and more subjectively enjoyable ones, but they have more quirks and cost multiples of the JBLs. As we'd expect, it's a whole other story when you high pass them so they're not trying to play deep bass.

A major test of the 306P’s performance is to hear how well they integrate with our own monitoring system, comprising ATC SCM100A main and SCM25A midfield monitors, along with Yamaha NS10M nearfields. The JBLs perform superbly in this context, sounding naturally balanced, free from hype and insightful. In terms of scale, they sound far bigger than our NS10s and, with their widescreen soundstaging, on a par with the larger SCM 25As. With that in mind, I would easily recommend the 306Ps as the sole monitoring system in modestly sized project studios. Conclusion Flexible connectivity with balanced XLR and 1/4″ TRS inputs, +4dBu / -10dBV input-sensitivity switch and adjustable volume control JBL offers an excellent 5-year warranty on professional loudspeaker products (except enclosures). Amplifiers are warrantied for three years, and enclosures for two. The warranty covers materials and workmanship. Our TakeIt’s also immediately clear that the Image Control Waveguide is playing an important part in the room-filling sound, as the stereo image remains coherent without being focused into a tight, central sweet spot. It's rather narrow. If you're distorting at 5% across the entire frequency range that's one thing, this is another - perceptibility of narrowband stuff like that tends to be much lower than we'd think when we see those sharp peaks on a graph.But for recreational listening, as Amir noted, those kinds of narrow anomalies really aren't as much of a problem as you might think from looking at a graph. (I was relieved that his subjective impressions matched up with mine. I've seen people freak out over that 1.6khz dip when looking at graphs alone) The other notable issue is the distortion present at higher volume levels. This is a monitor that doesn’t like to be pushed hard. Once you creep up beyond 85dB, you can hear the monitor struggle, especially with lower frequencies. This particular model includes a magnetically shielded, 6.5-inch mid/low-frequency transducer with a 1.5-inch voice coil, and a self-repairing dust dome that smooths out any accidental dents all by itself. (I gave it a gentle prod to test that claim and all seems well!) By reducing thermal-related effects such as power compression, the monitors are able to perform consistently over the full range of listening levels. A continuous rated SPL of 98dB is quoted along with peak SPL handling of 110dB at one metre (pink noise, C–weighted).
