Personally, I think if I were sharing this with children I would choose to read this in smaller shared or guided reading groups due to the various chances for ‘zooming in’ with children and exploring certain parts such as, Duck’s ideas on the afterlife or the poignancy of the final page. The flow of the story is gentle and intriguing, and the New Entrant audience that filled Downstage the day I saw it was utterly entranced. It is certainly something that can be used in a classroom or even in a family setting that is dealing with the passing of a loved one or in situations where students or children have questions about death. Lo sfogli quasi con timore, perché dalla prima pagina sai quale sarà la conclusione "perché così è la vita", e questo ti si stringe addosso come un abbraccio inaspettato.

In this moment of grief, the narrator feels betrayed because they invested in a love which was not eternal. Death effects not only you, but also those around you, while some people may stay unaffected depending on how they perceive it. Because death is such a complex subject for children, Duck, Death and the Tulip is able to explain death in a lighthearted manner without excessive emotions. I think Barthelme wanted readers to see that life and death are the basis for existence and that one cannot exist without the other; humor through escalation is brought into effect to create the harsh contrast of life versus death.TKSST features smarter, more meaningful content than what's usually served up by YouTube's algorithms, and amplifies the creators who make that content. In my opinion this is a book to share carefully with a small group of children or teenagers, being prepared to stop and talk about the ideas it brings up in the listeners’ minds.

From award-winning author and illustrator, Wolf Erlbruch, comes one of the world's best children's books about grief and loss. It’s about nature taking its course and subscribes to no religion, apart from scoffing gently at the stories Duck has heard about hell. Death has an endearing personality and Duck is amazingly tender and kind – warming Death with her feathery cloak when he feels the damp down at the pond. The illustrations are exceptionally memorable and suit the style of the book perfectly- it provides a beautiful opportunity to discuss the topic of death with children without it being daunting or frightening but rather more gentle and comforting.

Maria Nagy examined almost four hundred children between the ages of three and ten living in Budapest shortly before the Second World War.
